BHIM Full Form in Indian Languages
The name BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) is written in Indian languages mostly by sound, since it is also a short, well-known app name. Here it is in six of them.
What BHIM is and who runs it
BHIM is a mobile payment app built on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). It was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the not-for-profit body that also runs UPI itself. The Prime Minister launched it on 30 December 2016, a few weeks after the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes had pushed people to look for cash alternatives.
The name honours Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Unlike PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm, BHIM is not a company's commercial product. It is NPCI's own app for UPI payments, free to use, with no wallet to load and no shopping offers inside it, and it works in several Indian languages.
How BHIM differs from other UPI apps
All UPI apps run on the same network, so a payment made through BHIM reaches a shopkeeper just as fast as one made through any other app. What differs is the experience. BHIM keeps the screens simple, links directly to your bank account instead of a wallet, and supports UPI Lite, a feature for small everyday payments that do not need a PIN each time.
A second difference is reach. Besides the app, NPCI offers the USSD service *99#, which lets a person with a basic phone send money and check balance without mobile data. BHIM Aadhaar, introduced in 2017, let merchants accept payment using a customer's Aadhaar-linked bank account and fingerprint at a small biometric device. Many shops still use QR codes today, but this feature was built for places with weak smartphone use.
Setting up and making a payment
Download the app, allow it to verify your mobile number by SMS (the number must be the one registered with your bank), and pick the bank account you want to use. You then set an app passcode and a UPI PIN for the account. Your payment address, called a VPA, looks like name@bank, and it hides your account number from the person paying you.
To pay, scan a merchant's QR code or enter a VPA or mobile number, type the amount, and confirm with your UPI PIN. To receive money, share your VPA or show the QR code from the app. Transaction limits come from your bank and from NPCI's rules for the category of payment, so a limit that works at one bank may differ at another. If a payment is declined for crossing a limit, the app shows the reason.
Before sending, always read the name that appears after you enter a VPA. The app shows the registered name of the receiver, and that one check prevents most wrong-person transfers.
Paying without internet and on a feature phone
The *99# service runs over the GSM voice channel, so it works on any phone, even one without a data connection. Dial *99# from the mobile number registered with your bank, choose the option to send money, and follow the menu. It supports basic functions such as sending money, checking balance and changing the UPI PIN. It is slower than a smartphone app, and a small per-transaction charge may apply depending on the operator, but it matters for people in areas with poor data coverage who still want to use UPI.
This is why BHIM is often named in discussions about digital inclusion. For a user who cannot browse the internet at all, it offers a route into the banking system that does not depend on a data plan. The GSM network does the carrying.
BHIM and the UPI network abroad
UPI has been linked to payment systems overseas, and BHIM is one of the apps that can be used for it. A link with Singapore's PayNow began in February 2023, and similar arrangements started with Sri Lanka and Mauritius in 2024. UPI acceptance has also been set up in the UAE, Bhutan, Nepal and a few other countries, mostly for tourists and Indian travellers. Availability changes, so check the app or NPCI's page for the current list before travelling.
For anyone studying how digital payments work in India, BHIM is a clean example of a public-interest product: the rails and the app are both run by an organisation owned by banks, and the app does not carry advertisements.
Safety habits worth keeping
You enter the UPI PIN only to send money, never to receive it. A message or caller saying you must enter your PIN to get a refund or prize is a fraud, every time. Do not share OTPs or screen-share your phone with an unknown caller claiming to be from a bank or a delivery company.
If money goes to the wrong address, raise a complaint in the app, tell your bank, and use the NPCI dispute system. Report fraud quickly on the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or the cybercrime.gov.in portal. Fast reporting improves the chance of freezing the money.
BHIM never became the app with the biggest share of UPI payments, but it remains the plain, public-run option, and *99# is still a useful fallback when data fails. Learn the three safety rules above (check the name, never enter a PIN to receive money, report fraud fast) and any UPI app becomes safer to use.
