What a call detail record contains

A Call Detail Record is created by the telephone switch each time your number uses a service. It holds the calling and called numbers, the date and time, the duration, whether the call was answered, busy or failed, and the cell tower and area that carried it. Many records also carry the phone's IMEI and the SIM's IMSI number.

Similar records cover messages and data sessions, and telecom engineers group them as xDR. The classic CDR, though, is the voice-call log, produced automatically since exchanges became digital.

Where the record is created

Every call passes through a switching centre, and the software that routes it writes the record as routine billing work. Nothing is created specially for the police. It is a by-product of running a phone network.

What the record does not contain

The most useful fact about a CDR is what is missing: no recording of the conversation, no text of the message and no exact address. The location field names the tower serving the phone, which may mean a few hundred metres in a dense city and several kilometres in a rural area.

A CDR appears only when the phone actually uses the network: making a call, sending a message, or moving between areas that triggers a location update. An idle phone leaves a thinner trail than films suggest.

A worked example: a CDR may show that a phone sent a message at 9:12 pm through a tower in a certain area, and nothing more. It cannot tell you who held the phone or what the message said. That is why investigators combine CDRs with other evidence such as camera footage and bank records.

Why operators keep them

The original purpose was billing, since an itemised phone bill is built from CDRs. Operators also use the data for network planning, such as finding congested cells and dropped-call patterns, and for fraud detection, such as cloned SIMs and illegal call routing.

Law enforcement is another user. Interception and call-record requests in India are governed by telecom law and rules requiring orders from competent authorities. The Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 has been replaced by the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000 contains related provisions. Telecom licences also oblige operators to give lawful access.

Customers see CDRs indirectly when a billing dispute is resolved. If your bill shows a call you never made, ask the operator for the itemised record for that day. The record lists each call with its time, number and duration, and the operator can compare it with the network log.

How police use CDRs

In an investigation a CDR shows who a suspect spoke to and how often, and cell data sketches movement across days or weeks. Many records put together can test an alibi or map associates. Analysts often compare the records of several numbers to see who was near the same tower at the same time.

Courts expect that requests follow legal process. Electronic records need a proper certificate before they can be produced as evidence, a requirement now found in the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, which replaced the Indian Evidence Act, 1872. Evidence obtained carelessly can be challenged.

Retention, privacy and your own records

Telecom licence rules require operators to keep call detail records for two years, since the Department of Telecommunications raised the period from one year in December 2021. A request made after that period may return nothing. Handing over a subscriber's records without legal authority is an offence the courts treat seriously.

You can see your own call history through your operator's app, a statement or an itemised bill. The full network record with tower data is not normally given to an ordinary customer, and no operator will give you someone else's details.

CDR, IPDR and look-alike terms

CDR covers voice calls and messages. An IPDR, or Internet Protocol Detail Record, logs internet sessions and is kept by internet providers. A CDR may also be written as Call Data Record in some documents, and the meaning is the same. Do not confuse CDR with the Cash Deposit Machine, which is a bank term abbreviated CDM.

A call detail record is ordinary network paperwork that sometimes becomes evidence. Knowing what it shows (connections and towers) and what it does not (conversations) clears up most of the confusion around phone tracing.

CDR Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of CDR?

CDR stands for Call Detail Record, the log a telephone switch creates for each call, message or data session. It is also written as Call Data Record.

Does a CDR record what was said on the call?

No. A CDR holds only metadata: numbers, time, duration and location. Recording a conversation requires lawful interception under a separate order.

How do police use CDRs?

They map a suspect's contacts and movements through the towers a phone connected to. Courts require records to be obtained and produced following legal process.

How long do operators store CDRs?

Licence rules require two years, following a December 2021 change from one year. After that, the data may be deleted.

What is the difference between CDR and IPDR?

A CDR logs calls and messages, while an IPDR logs internet sessions. Both are metadata, and neither holds the content.

Can I get my own CDR?

You can get an itemised call history from your operator's app or customer service. The complete network record is usually shared only on legal request.
