What a Virtual Payment Address Is

A VPA is the string you type or scan when paying through UPI: a name, an at sign and a bank or app handle, such as 9812345678@paytm, ramesh@sbi or anita@okaxis. Underneath, that handle points to one bank account.

The mapping is held within the UPI system, so before you confirm a payment the app shows the registered name of the account holder. That two-second check is the simplest defence against sending money to the wrong person.

Handles come from whichever app or bank you sign up with: @ybl and @ibl, @paytm, @okaxis, @okhdfcbank, @oksbi and others appear on QR codes across India. The name before the at sign is usually yours to pick, if it is still free.

How a VPA Differs From an Account Number

Sharing a Virtual Payment Address gives away neither the account number nor the IFSC, so a shopkeeper or colleague can pay you without ever seeing your bank details. You can change or close a handle while the underlying account stays untouched.

One account can carry several VPAs (one for business, one for personal use) and each VPA resolves to exactly one account. If the name displayed on confirmation does not match the person you intended to pay, stop and recheck. That mismatch catches most fraud before the money moves.

Person-to-person payments through a VPA carry no charge. Some merchant payments can show a small platform fee in certain apps, but sending money to another individual remains free.

The VPA is only an address, so a fraudster who knows yours cannot take money out of your account. The risk comes from requests: a 'collect' request that you approve and a PIN you enter. Never enter a PIN to receive money, because receiving needs no PIN at all.

Creating and Managing Your VPAs

Setup takes minutes in any UPI app: the mobile number must be the one registered with your bank, an SMS verifies the SIM, and you set a UPI PIN using your debit card details. That PIN, not the VPA, authorises the transfer.

You can add more handles from the app's settings, delete one you no longer want, and generate a QR code tied to a handle for your shop. Because the SIM is checked on a new device, UPI refuses to work when the registered number sits in another handset. That is a security feature, not a fault.

If you have forgotten which handle you gave someone, open the profile section of your app. Most list every linked VPA, including older ones opened against another bank.

If a payment fails after you entered the VPA, check three things first: a typing error before the at sign, a handle that has been deleted, and a bank account with a different registered mobile number.

Banks and apps can limit how many UPI transactions or how much money can move in a day, and the limits differ by bank and by type of payment. If a transfer is declined near the end of a day, a daily limit is a common reason.

UPI: the System the VPA Sits Inside

UPI was launched by NPCI in April 2016, and the BHIM app followed at the end of that year to push adoption. The VPA is the address layer that turned bank transfers into something as easy as typing a name.

Features have since piled up on the same handles: UPI Lite for small-value payments, UPI 123Pay for feature phones, autopay mandates for subscriptions and bills, and RuPay credit cards linked to UPI.

UPI also crosses borders now, with linkages that let Indian apps pay merchants in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, the UAE, Mauritius and France, all addressed through a VPA created at home.

The Virtual Payment Address is the small piece of design that made UPI usable for everyone, an address instead of an account number. Check the name on screen before you pay, and keep your PIN to yourself.

VPA Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of VPA?

Virtual Payment Address is the full form of VPA, the unique UPI identifier that looks like an email address and lets you send or receive money without sharing bank account details.

Is a VPA the same as a UPI ID?

Yes, the two terms are used interchangeably. Your UPI ID is the VPA you created in the app, and it is what the payer enters or scans to route money to your account.

Is it safe to share my VPA publicly?

It is safer than sharing an account number, since a VPA alone cannot pull money out without your UPI PIN. It does let anyone attempt a payment to you and reveals your registered name, so many traders publish a QR code rather than the handle itself.

Can I have more than one VPA?

Yes. Each bank account you link can have multiple handles, and you can create or delete VPAs from the app's settings. Each handle still points to one account at a time.

Are there charges for paying a VPA?

Person-to-person UPI payments through a VPA are free for both sides. Some apps add a small fee for certain merchant payments, but ordinary transfers between individuals cost nothing.

How do I find my own VPA?

Open your UPI app and go to the profile or bank accounts section. The handle shown against each linked account is your VPA, and you can copy it or share it as a QR code.
