UPI Full Form
Unified Payments Interface
What does UPI stand for? A finance term, explained.
UPI Full Form in English, letter by letter
UPI is an instant real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India for inter-bank transactions via mobile phones.
UPI Full Form in Indian Languages
UPI is usually spoken in English even in regional language apps, so these are transliterations.
Plural payments, and other small things people get wrong
UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface. Plenty of people write Payment in the singular, but the official name from NPCI has payments in the plural. It is an instant payment system for moving money between bank accounts from a mobile phone.
You do not need to know the other person's account number. A UPI ID, a QR code or a linked mobile number is enough, and the money moves in seconds, any day of the week.
How it got here
NPCI was formed in 2009 to bring India's retail payment systems together. UPI was built on top of IMPS and regulated by the RBI, with a pilot on 11 April 2016, launched in Mumbai by the then RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. 21 banks took part at the start.
Bank apps reached customers from August 2016. After that, third-party apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm became everyday names, and NPCI also runs its own app, BHIM.
What happens when you scan a QR at the chai stall
You open your app, scan the shopkeeper's QR code, type the amount and enter your UPI PIN. Your bank debits the account and the shopkeeper's bank credits theirs, and both phones show a confirmation almost at once.
The UPI ID, also called a VPA, sits in the middle so that neither side needs to share bank details. You can link more than one bank account to a single app and pick which one to pay from.
Features added since 2016
UPI 2.0, launched in August 2018, added overdraft account linking, pre-authorised mandates and AutoPay for recurring payments. Later, RuPay credit cards could be linked, and UPI 123PAY brought payments to feature phones.
Limits for different payment types, such as hospital fees or IPO applications, have been revised several times by the RBI. Check the current limit on your bank or app before a large payment.
Paying for someone else, with limits
A newer feature called UPI Circle, launched in August 2024, lets one person allow another to pay from their account. The primary user can set a spending limit, or can insist on entering the PIN personally for each payment. It is handy when a parent wants to let a grown-up child or an elderly relative pay without handing over the PIN.
Each app rolls features out at its own pace, so look inside your own app to see what is available to you.
Staying safe
Your PIN is needed only to send money. If someone asks you to enter it to receive a refund, a cashback or a prize, it is a scam. Avoid approving collect requests from people you do not know.
If you lose money to fraud, report it to your bank and the cyber crime helpline quickly. Do not rely on a number you found in a search result, since fake support numbers are common.
Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. You enter a PIN only to send money, never to receive it, so any request to enter it for a refund or a prize is a scam.
