What the CFL full form describes

A Compact Fluorescent Lamp is a fluorescent tube bent into a spiral or double loop so it fits a normal bulb holder, with a small electronic ballast in the base. Current excites mercury vapour inside, which gives off ultraviolet light, and a phosphor coating turns that into visible white light.

The numbers on the box are worth reading. A 15 watt CFL is sold as the replacement for a 60 watt filament bulb, giving roughly 800 to 900 lumens for about a quarter of the power. A household CFL commonly lasts 6,000 to 10,000 hours, against 1,000 hours for a filament bulb.

India relied on cheap filament bulbs into the 2000s, so CFLs were promoted to cut peak demand: the Bureau of Energy Efficiency put star labels on lamps, and the Bachat Lamp Yojana sold discounted CFLs through electricity distribution companies.

Do not confuse CFL with CFC (chlorofluorocarbon), the refrigerant gas. The letters look alike but the two have nothing in common.

The trade-off: a little mercury

Every CFL holds a small amount of mercury, commonly a few milligrams, sealed inside the tube as vapour. That is far less than an old clinical thermometer contained, but it is still a heavy metal, which is why breakage indoors calls for open windows and no vacuum cleaner.

Mercury is why disposal matters. Fluorescent lamps are covered by the E-Waste (Management) Rules, and in many places used lamps still go into ordinary dustbins, so look for shops or collection points that accept old lamps.

It also explains the behaviour people disliked: a CFL takes a few seconds to reach full brightness, and frequent switching shortens its life. That made it a poor fit for staircases and sensor fittings, one reason households moved to LED.

CFL, LED and the old tube light compared

Against a tubelight, a CFL gave similar light in a smaller fitting on less power. Against an LED it loses on instant full brightness, life (LEDs often last 25,000 hours or more), mercury content and, by the late 2010s, price.

Running cost is what people really compare. A 60 watt filament bulb used four hours a day burns about 87.6 units (kWh) a year, a 15 watt CFL about 21.9 and a 10 watt LED about 14.6. At 8 rupees a unit that is about 700, 175 and 117 rupees a year.

The savings depend on your local tariff and hours of use. A lamp that burns eight hours in a shop saves twice what it does in a home that uses it four hours, so the replacement pays for itself sooner in commercial use.

Buying and fitting a CFL

Choosing by fitting, lumens and colour

Indian holders are usually B22 bayonet fittings, with E27 screw fittings on some fixtures, so check the base first. Buy on lumens, not watts, and check colour temperature: around 2700K looks warm for bedrooms and 6500K looks like daylight for kitchens and shops.

Fitting rules that extend lamp life

Keep a CFL out of fully enclosed fixtures and damp places, because trapped heat ages the ballast. Do not use it on a standard dimmer unless the box says dimmable. When it flickers or takes much longer to warm up, replace it.

If a CFL breaks at home

Ventilate the room for 10 to 15 minutes before cleaning and keep children and pets out. Scoop the fragments with stiff cardboard onto paper, never with a vacuum cleaner, which spreads the mercury, and use sticky tape to lift fine powder from a hard floor.

Seal everything, including the paper and tape, in a glass jar or zip bag and take it to a collection point. If skin touches the powder, wash it off.

The CFL belonged to the middle chapter of India's lighting story, proving that homes could cut power use without changing their fittings. Replace failing ones with LEDs, and hand old lamps to a collection point.

CFL Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of CFL?

The full form of CFL is Compact Fluorescent Lamp, a bent fluorescent tube with a built-in ballast made to fit ordinary bulb holders.

How many watts is a CFL compared to a normal bulb?

A 15 watt CFL roughly matches a 60 watt filament bulb, and a 20 watt CFL a 100 watt bulb. An LED of 9 to 12 watts gives the same light on even less power.

Is a broken CFL dangerous?

It is not an emergency, but ventilate the room for 10 to 15 minutes and never vacuum the pieces. Collect the fragments, seal them in a jar and take them to a collection point.

Should I buy a CFL or an LED now?

An LED, in almost every case. It uses less power for the same light, lasts longer, contains no mercury and costs about the same or less.

Why does my CFL flicker or start slowly?

A warm-up of a few seconds is normal. Persistent flicker, dark tube ends or a slow start mean the electrodes or ballast are wearing out.

Can CFLs be thrown in the dustbin?

No. They contain mercury and should go to a collection point for e-waste or lamps.
