API is short for Application Programming Interface. It is a set of rules that lets one program ask another program for something, such as data or an action, without knowing how the other one works inside.

The easiest picture is a restaurant. You do not walk into the kitchen. You tell the waiter what you want, the waiter takes the order in, and food comes back. The API is the waiter: a fixed menu of requests it will accept and a fixed way of answering.

You use APIs every day without noticing

When a travel app shows live train or flight status, it asks another system through an API. When a shopping site shows you a map to pick your delivery address, it is calling a maps API. When you pay from an app, the app talks to your bank through one as well, and UPI itself runs as an open API.

The nice part for developers is that they do not have to build everything from scratch. They borrow a working piece, follow its rules and move on.

Where web APIs fit in

Today, when people say API they usually mean a web API, where a program sends a request over the internet and gets a reply. The reply is most often in JSON, and the request is made over HTTP.

The REST style, described by Roy Fielding in his 2000 dissertation, became the most common design. The idea of an API is much older than the word, though. The term itself was recorded in a 1968 paper and became common in the 1960s and 70s.

One acronym, four different jobs

In pharma, API is Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient, the substance in a medicine that does the work. In Indian police services, it can be Assistant Police Inspector. In Java forums, people also mean the standard library when they say the Java API.

Look at where you found it. A question on a coding site is about software, a chemistry or drug-manufacturing paper is about ingredients, and a police recruitment notice is about a rank.

If you want to try one yourself

A good first step is a free public API that needs no sign-up. Open its URL in a browser, look at the data that comes back, and then read it with a few lines of Python or JavaScript. Seeing real data arrive teaches more than any definition.

Many APIs need a key. Keep that key private and never put it in code you upload to a public site, because other people can use it at your cost.

When you read API documentation, start with the example request and response. Everything else in the page is easier once you have seen one working call.
