The other meaning is Application Service Provider, a company that runs software on its own servers and delivers it to customers over a network for a monthly fee. Payroll, accounting, ERP and CRM packages were typical examples around 1999 and 2000.

It was the forerunner of SaaS (SaaS). In the ASP model the vendor often hosted a separate copy of the software for each client and charged for set-up and customisation. SaaS vendors run one shared application that every customer logs into, usually on a per-user subscription.

Indian software firms such as Zoho and Freshworks are mature examples of the same idea in its SaaS form.

ASP in police and legal circles

Outside IT, Indian readers also meet ASP as Assistant Superintendent of Police. It is the junior-most rank of the IPS, held by probationers who are in charge of a sub-division after training.

State police services use the rank Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for officers promoted from within. Courts also have Assistant Public Prosecutors, shortened to APP rather than ASP. Check the document before assuming which meaning is intended.

The third is the exit clause: whether you can export your data in a usable format and how long the provider keeps it afterwards. The fourth is the price of customisation, which was where many older ASP arrangements became expensive. A clear contract here saves a lot of argument later.
