The skeleton behind every web page you open

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is the standard language for describing what is on a web page and how it is structured, so a browser like Chrome knows what to show. Headings, paragraphs, lists, images, links and forms are all written in HTML.

The online form you fill for an exam registration is a good example. The boxes, the dropdown for your state and the submit button are all marked up in HTML. The browser reads the tags and draws the page, and you never see the tags themselves.

Reading a tag without being scared of it

HTML works with tags written inside angle brackets. A paragraph starts with the p tag and ends with a closing p tag, and the text in between is your paragraph. Other tags, like img for a picture, bring content straight into the page.

Pieces of a page are called elements, and they sit inside one another like boxes. A heading, a paragraph and a link may all live inside one big container. Once you spot that pattern, any page source starts to look readable.

Tags can also carry attributes, which are extra details inside the opening tag. A link, for example, uses an href attribute to say where it points, and an image uses src to say which file to show.

A first page, line by line

A minimal page has a doctype line that tells the browser it is HTML, then an html element holding two parts: a head with the page title, and a body with everything the visitor sees.

Inside the body you might put an h1 heading with your name, a p paragraph about yourself, a ul list of your subjects and an a tag that links to another page. Save it as index.html and double-click the file. It opens in your browser, with no internet needed.

A common beginner mistake is forgetting to close a tag, which can make the rest of the page look strange. Another is saving the file with a txt ending, so the browser shows the code instead of the page.

Berners-Lee at CERN and the first HTML

The physicist Tim Berners-Lee, then working at CERN, proposed a document-sharing system in 1989. He specified HTML and wrote the first browser and server software in late 1990. The first public description, a document called HTML Tags, came in late 1991.

Today the language is not owned by one person. It is built on top of earlier ideas from a document format called SGML, and the web has used it for decades. It works alongside the WWW and HTTP, which carry pages to your screen.

The current version is HTML5, a living standard that adds elements for video, audio, and clearer page structure, so a page no longer needs plug-ins to play media.

HTML, CSS and JavaScript: who does what

A web page usually needs three languages working together. HTML gives the content and structure. CSS handles the look, such as colours, fonts and layout. JavaScript adds behaviour, like a menu that opens when you tap it.

Because HTML only describes the content and does not calculate or decide, many teachers say it is a markup language and not a programming language. That is a favourite viva question, so remember the one-line answer.

If you want to learn it

You do not need a laptop with a powerful chip or any paid software. A free text editor and a browser are enough. Write a simple page with your name, a photo and a list of your favourite subjects, save it with an html ending, and open it.

Practise on small pages first. Most college courses, from BCA to polytechnic, start with HTML before moving to CSS and JavaScript, so the basics will carry over.

A realistic first month: week one for basic tags and links, week two for lists, images and tables, week three for forms, and week four for building a small personal page with CSS styling. Free tutorials and the browser's own Inspect tool, opened with F12, are enough to practise with.

To see HTML at work right now, open any web page, right-click and choose View Page Source. What you see is the same kind of tagged text, and it is a surprisingly good way to learn.

HTML Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of HTML?

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is the standard language used to describe the content and structure of a web page so that a browser can display it.

What is the HTML full form in Hindi?

In Hindi, HTML is written as हाइपरटेक्स्ट मार्कअप लैंग्वेज. There is no official Hindi translation, so classrooms and books use the English words in Devanagari.

Is HTML a programming language?

Not really. HTML describes what is on a page, such as headings, paragraphs and links. It does not make decisions or calculations. Languages like JavaScript or Python are used for that kind of logic.

Who created HTML?

Tim Berners-Lee, a physicist working at CERN, specified HTML and wrote the first browser and server software in late 1990. The first public description, called HTML Tags, appeared in late 1991.

What is the difference between HTML and CSS?

HTML gives the page its content and structure. CSS controls the look, such as colours, fonts and layout. HTML is the house and CSS is the paint and furniture.

Can I learn HTML without any coding background?

Yes. It is usually the first thing people learn for the web. You only need a text editor and a browser. Make a small page about yourself and open it in Chrome.

What does the hypertext in HTML mean?

Hypertext is text that contains links to other text. Clicking a link takes you to another page or another part of the same page, which is what makes the web a web.
