CSP Full Form
Customer Service Point
What does CSP stand for? A technology term, explained.
CSP Full Form in English, letter by letter
In Indian banking a CSP is a Customer Service Point, a small agent-run outlet for opening accounts and depositing or withdrawing cash in villages.
CSP Full Form in Indian Languages
Banking agents say CSP in every language, while the Hindi name Grahak Seva Kendra appears on posters. Here is the name in six Indian languages.
Banking at the village shop
Many Indian villages have no bank branch, and the nearest one can be a bus ride and a lost day of wages away. A Customer Service Point closes that gap. It is a counter, often inside a grocery or mobile shop, where an agent with a small device lets you do the simple things you would otherwise do at a branch. In many places you will also hear the agent called a Bank Mitra.
The idea grew out of the Reserve Bank of India's decision in 2006 to let banks appoint Business Correspondents. The push became much bigger after the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana opened in August 2014, because millions of new accounts needed somewhere close by to deposit and withdraw.
How the agent actually works
The bank signs up a Business Correspondent company or an individual agent network. The company recruits local agents and gives each one a point-of-sale or micro-ATM device. When you come in, the agent checks you by Aadhaar fingerprint or a card, runs the transaction on the device and hands you a receipt.
The money behind the counter belongs to the agent, who keeps a float so that withdrawals can be paid out in cash. For every deposit, withdrawal or transfer the agent receives a small commission, which is why a good CSP agent stays in the village and keeps the shop open.
What you can and cannot do
Typical services are opening a zero-balance account, depositing cash, withdrawing a few thousand rupees, sending money to another account, checking your balance and drawing government payments such as pension, scholarship and employment-scheme wages that arrive by direct transfer. Some CSPs also help with small insurance and pension enrolments.
Loans, large cash withdrawals, locker access and cheque books are normally not available. For those you still have to go to the branch your account belongs to. Limits per transaction and per day are set by the bank, so ask the agent before you plan a large payment.
A practical example: a farmer receives a scholarship or a payment by direct transfer for a child. Instead of travelling to the branch, they walk to the CSP, give an Aadhaar number, scan a fingerprint, and withdraw a part of the amount in cash, receiving a printed slip and an SMS from the bank. Keep the slip until the SMS arrives.
How to check a CSP before you trust it
Ask which bank the outlet works for and look for the bank's name on the board. Make sure the transaction produces an SMS from the bank itself, not just a slip from the agent. If the agent asks you to hand over your ATM PIN, your OTP or your Aadhaar biometric on a second device, walk away.
Complaints go to the bank first. If the bank does not respond within 30 days, or you are not satisfied with the reply, you can approach the RBI Ombudsman through the RBI's complaint portal.
Becoming a CSP agent
People who want to run a CSP do not apply to the RBI. They apply to a bank's Business Correspondent partner, or to the bank itself in some cases. The usual requirements are a Class 10 or 12 pass, a shop or fixed address, a smartphone or the device, and some working cash for the float. Training and certification (often through IIBF) are standard.
Be careful with advertisements that ask for a large 'registration fee' to get a CSP. Check with the bank or its named Business Correspondent before paying anyone.
The other CSP: cloud providers
Outside banking, CSP is also written for Cloud Service Provider, a firm that rents out servers, storage and software over the internet. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are the best-known ones. Job listings that say CSP in an IT context nearly always mean this, so read the rest of the advertisement before deciding which meaning applies.
A CSP is a small bank counter in your area and not a bank in itself. Keep every receipt and SMS, and use the branch for anything bigger than daily cash needs.
