Where TGT sits in the school ladder

Indian government schools usually divide teachers into three tiers. The primary teacher, or PRT, handles Classes 1 to 5 and teaches almost every subject. The TGT takes Classes 6 to 10 and usually sticks to the one or two subjects of the graduation degree. The PGT teaches Classes 11 and 12 and holds a master's degree in the subject.

The name states the bar: a trained graduate. A TGT in a Kendriya Vidyalaya, for example, may teach mathematics from Class 6 to 10 and carry a class teacher's duties for one section. Students at this stage begin to face serious exams, so subject depth matters more than it does in primary classes.

What most TGT notifications ask for

The pattern is consistent enough to plan around. You need a bachelor's degree with the subject you want to teach, such as a BSc for mathematics or science and a BA for Hindi or social science, usually with a minimum percentage that varies by recruiting body. A teaching qualification comes alongside it: a B.Ed in most cases. Many notifications also require a pass in the state TET or CTET.

The subject-match rule

Notifications are strict about which degrees count for which subject. A BA with political science may not make you eligible for a social science post that demands history or geography as a main paper, and a botany BSc will not qualify you for a physics vacancy. Read the listed subject combinations word for word before you pay the application fee, since fees are generally not refunded.

Age limits and relaxations

The upper age limit differs by recruiting body, and is commonly somewhere between 30 and 40 years for general category candidates. Reserved categories, ex-servicemen and some serving contract teachers get relaxations. Use the age limit printed in the current notification, and check which certificate is accepted as proof of date of birth, usually the Class 10 certificate, since it is calculated on a cut-off date given there.

Who hires TGTs

Several kinds of bodies do the hiring. The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) recruits for Delhi government schools, and its TGT posts are among the most competitive. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) recruits for Kendriya Vidyalayas through its own exam. State bodies such as the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission, BPSC in Bihar and the West Bengal School Service Commission handle state schools, and some states also hire on contract at district level.

The routes differ in salary, security and location. A KVS posting can transfer you across India every few years. A state commission job keeps you inside the state, often in a district you did not pick first. Contract posts are easier to get but less secure until a state regularises them.

Pay, workload and the school day

KVS and other central posts follow the Seventh Pay Commission, with TGT placed at Pay Level 7 (basic pay starting at ₹44,900), and allowances added on top. State schools use their own scales, so a TGT's take-home pay depends on the state and on city allowances.

The working day usually has five or six teaching periods, one section as class teacher, and duties beyond the classroom: invigilation, election and census work, and school records. In return teachers get a fixed timetable, long holidays and, in most services, a stable career with a pension arrangement set by the employer. The workload settles down once the timetable does.

Preparing for the written exam

Papers usually combine general awareness, reasoning, teaching aptitude and language sections with a long paper on your own subject. Some bodies use a screening test first and a subject test next, and a few add an interview or a computer-based skill test. Check the scheme in each notification, since it changes between bodies and between years.

A sensible plan is to study the syllabus for your subject up to graduation level, revise the school books for Classes 6 to 10 of the board concerned, and practise previous papers under time. Keep your Class 10 certificate, your degree certificates, B.Ed marksheet and TET certificate scanned and ready, since many forms ask for them on the first day.

If teaching Classes 6 to 10 is the goal, start from the subject, not the exam. Get the degree and B.Ed combination right, clear the TET that applies to your target state, then watch DSSSB, KVS and state commission notifications, since their dates rarely overlap.

TGT Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of TGT?

TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teacher. It is the post for a teacher with a graduation in the subject who handles Classes 6 to 10, between the primary teacher (PRT) and the post-graduate teacher (PGT).

What is the difference between PRT, TGT and PGT?

A PRT teaches Classes 1 to 5 and needs a diploma or degree in elementary education plus a TET. A TGT teaches Classes 6 to 10 and needs a graduation plus a teaching qualification. A PGT teaches Classes 11 and 12 and needs a post-graduation in the subject.

Is B.Ed compulsory for a TGT post?

For fresh applicants in most recruitments, yes. A B.Ed or an equivalent teaching qualification is a standard condition, though a few states accept older diplomas or give relaxations to serving teachers.

Do I need to clear TET or CTET for TGT jobs?

Usually yes. Most notifications ask for a qualifying TET or CTET certificate and ask for its number in the form. A few states conduct their own recruitment exam instead, so read each notification.

What is the TGT salary in KVS?

KVS places TGT at Pay Level 7 of the Seventh Pay Commission, with basic pay starting at ₹44,900 per month and allowances on top. State school scales differ.

Which subjects can a TGT teach?

Common TGT subjects are English, Hindi, Sanskrit, mathematics, science (physics, chemistry, biology), social science, and regional languages. Notifications also advertise art, physical education and computer posts separately.
