Every late November, lakhs of MBA aspirants sit for one exam: CAT, the Common Admission Test, the gateway to the IIMs and many other business schools across India.
What the Common Admission Test covers
CAT is conducted by one of the older IIMs on a rotating basis: IIM Ahmedabad in 2023, IIM Calcutta in 2024 and IIM Kozhikode in 2025, with IIM Indore reported as the host for 2026. The test usually falls on the last Sunday of November.
The paper has three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. The 2024 and 2025 papers carried 68 questions to be done in two hours, with 40 minutes per section, three marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong multiple-choice answer. Type-in-the-answer questions carry no penalty. Earlier editions had 66 questions, so check the current notification. The test is not computer-adaptive: each slot gets a fixed paper, and scores are scaled across slots afterwards.
Eligibility and application
You need a bachelor's degree with at least 50 percent aggregate, or 45 percent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, and final-year students may apply provisionally. There is no age limit and no work experience requirement, though many IIMs value experience during interviews.
One registration covers all the IIMs that use CAT, and the score is accepted by many private and state schools as well. Keep an eye on the official site iimcat.ac.in, where the notification appears with the exact dates, fees and reservation rules for that year.
Reservation follows central policy: 15 percent for SC, 7.5 percent for ST, 27 percent for OBC-NCL and 10 percent for EWS, with separate horizontal reservation for PwBD candidates, and each institute applies the rules in its own shortlist.
What your CAT percentile really means
Percentile is the share of test-takers you scored above, not the percentage of marks you secured. A 99 percentile means about one candidate in a hundred scored higher than you. Because papers differ by slot, raw marks are converted to a scaled score before percentiles are calculated.
Old IIM calls for general-category candidates usually begin around the high nineties, but percentile is not the whole filter. Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation scores, work experience, gender and academic diversity all carry weight, which is why engineers often need a higher percentile than humanities graduates for the same call.
The score report gives a scaled score and a percentile for each section as well as overall, and institutes set section cut-offs of their own. Two candidates with identical overall percentiles can therefore collect very different sets of calls.
Colleges that accept CAT scores
The IIMs sit at the top, joined by FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR Mumbai, the management schools of the IITs and IIM Mumbai, which was formerly NITIE. Beyond these, hundreds of other institutes accept CAT scores for their own admissions, and the list is published on the exam's official site.
Shortlisting is followed by a written ability test and a personal interview at most institutes. Several of them weight the interview heavily enough to reorder candidates completely, so a high percentile without preparation there proves little.
From score card to final offer
Results usually come out in the second week of January, and the score card shows a scaled score and percentile for each section as well as overall. The score is valid for that admission cycle only, so a candidate who wants another try must write CAT again the next November.
Institutes then publish shortlists and call candidates for a written ability test, group discussion or personal interview, mostly between January and March. Final offers follow in the weeks after. Keep your graduation mark sheets, caste or EWS certificates and work experience letters ready before the calls start, because some institutes give only a few days to confirm documents.
CAT versus other MBA entrance exams
XAT is run by XLRI in January, SNAP by Symbiosis, NMAT by NMIMS through GMAC, CMAT by AICTE and MAT by AIMA across four windows a year. GMAT or GRE covers business schools abroad and a few Indian programmes.
Most aspirants write CAT plus two or three others, because CAT happens once a year and one bad morning can end a season. Check which exams your target schools actually accept before paying the registration fees.
CAT is a two-hour, three-section test, and the percentile it produces is only the first filter in a process that also reads your academics, work experience and interview. Decide which section you can improve fastest, and register on the official portal well before the deadline.
