CTET Full Form in Indian Languages
Teaching job notifications keep asking for a CTET certificate, and CTET is the Central Teacher Eligibility Test, which you can read below in six Indian languages.
What the CTET certificate is and who runs it
CTET full form is Central Teacher Eligibility Test. The CBSE conducts it for the Government of India, under the framework NCTE laid down after the Right to Education Act, 2009. Passing it earns a certificate that says you meet the minimum standard to be considered for a teaching post in classes 1 to 8.
The wording matters. CTET is an eligibility certificate, not a job and not a ranking. It does not place you in any school. What it does is clear one condition in the recruitment notice, so that you are allowed to apply. After that you still face the employer's own selection process.
Central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, schools in Union Territories and some private schools ask for it. State government schools mostly ask for their own state TET, though some states also accept CTET. Read the individual notification rather than assuming.
Paper 1 and Paper 2: which one suits you
Paper 1 is for people who want to teach classes 1 to 5, the primary stage. Paper 2 is for classes 6 to 8, the upper primary stage. If you want to teach any class from 1 to 8, you need to qualify in both papers, and you can sit both in the same attempt.
For Paper 1 the usual route is senior secondary with at least 50 per cent marks plus a two-year D.El.Ed or a four-year B.El.Ed, with a 45 per cent relaxation for reserved categories. Paper 2 asks for graduation plus a D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or B.Ed. Candidates in the final year of the course may apply, but the qualification has to be completed before they take up a post. Check the current information bulletin, since NCTE has changed these conditions over the years.
Each paper is multiple choice, 150 questions in 150 minutes, with one mark per question and no negative marking. The general pass mark is 60 per cent, which is 90 out of 150, and reserved categories get a relaxation as the bulletin states.
Subjects tested in each paper
Both papers have five blocks of 30 questions. The first is Child Development and Pedagogy, which many candidates underestimate because it is about how children learn and how to handle a classroom, not about any subject taught in college. Two language papers follow: Language I is the medium of instruction you choose, and Language II is a different language.
The fourth and fifth blocks differ. Paper 1 has Mathematics and Environmental Studies. Paper 2 has Mathematics and Science for those who will teach those subjects, or Social Studies and Social Science for the others. A teacher of languages may take either of the last two options.
Questions lean on classroom situations. You may be given a short passage of a child making a mistake and asked which teaching response fits best. Past papers are the best guide, and three or four timed full-length practice sets before the exam tell you more than another round of reading.
Validity and what changed in 2021
The certificate used to expire. It was valid for seven years, and earlier for five. NCTE changed this in September 2020, and CBSE announced in 2021 that the certificate is now valid for life, which also applied to earlier certificates that had not yet lapsed in the way the notice described.
Because the rule changed, old blog posts and coaching posters still quote the seven-year figure. Do not trust them. The same goes for the application fee and exam dates, which vary from cycle to cycle and by category. The only reliable source is the CTET information bulletin on the CBSE exam portal.
Passing again is allowed, and many candidates re-sit to raise their score because some recruitments give weightage to marks.
What comes after CTET
Once you hold the certificate, you apply for vacancies. DSSSB recruits teachers for Delhi government schools, state commissions recruit for their schools, and KVS and NVS run their own selection tests. Some of these demand CTET and others accept the state TET or let candidates choose.
Vacancies are advertised irregularly, so a qualified candidate may wait for a year or more. Use the gap to prepare for the recruitment exam itself, which usually tests subject knowledge at a deeper level than CTET does.
One more point for those weighing a state versus a central certificate. The syllabi overlap heavily, so preparing for one covers most of the other. Candidates who may teach outside their home state often hold both.
Treat CTET as a gate you have to pass once, and plan the recruitment exam you actually want to win while the certificate stays valid for life. Read the bulletin for the current fee, dates and eligibility, because those are the details that change.
CTET Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of CTET?
CTET stands for Central Teacher Eligibility Test, a national exam conducted by CBSE. Passing it makes you eligible to apply for teaching posts in classes 1 to 8 where the recruiter accepts it. It is a qualification, not a job.
What is the difference between CTET and TET?
TET is the general name for a teacher eligibility test. States run their own, such as UPTET or HTET, for schools in that state. CTET is the central version, and whether a state school accepts it depends on that state's rules.
Who should take Paper 1 and who should take Paper 2?
Paper 1 is for classes 1 to 5 and Paper 2 is for classes 6 to 8. If you want to teach any class from 1 to 8 you need to pass both papers, and they can be taken in the same sitting.
How long is the CTET certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for life. It used to be valid for seven years, and the change to lifetime validity was announced in 2021. Check the latest information bulletin before relying on any older source.
What is the CTET qualifying percentage and is there negative marking?
The general qualifying mark is 60 per cent, or 90 out of 150, with relaxations for reserved categories as notified. Each paper has 150 multiple-choice questions and there is no negative marking.
Does passing CTET guarantee a teaching job?
No. CTET only clears the eligibility condition. Each recruiting body then runs its own exam, interview and document check, and vacancies are advertised irregularly, so selection can take more than one cycle.
