So what exactly does a TET check?
A TET is an eligibility exam for people who want to teach in Indian schools. It is not a recruitment exam. It asks whether you are fit to teach, not whether a job is waiting for you. The paper usually covers child development and pedagogy, the languages you plan to teach in, and either mathematics, environmental studies, science or social studies depending on the level.
Most states run two levels. Level 1 covers Classes 1 to 5, and the usual qualification for it is a two-year diploma in elementary education or a four-year B.El.Ed. Level 2 covers Classes 6 to 8, where a B.Ed or an equivalent degree is the standard ticket. Some states add a further paper for senior classes, but the naming and the pattern shift from state to state.
The central paper and the state papers are not the same thing
The central TET is the CTET, conducted by the CBSE for the central government. It has two papers, and it is what Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and many private schools ask for. States run their own versions (UPTET in Uttar Pradesh, REET in Rajasthan, Bihar TET, MAHA TET in Maharashtra, HTET in Haryana) and those are the ones that matter for state government school recruitment.
Does a CTET score help you in a state? Often, yes. Several states accept CTET alongside their own TET for a share of vacancies. But read the specific notification you are applying against, because the mix of CTET and state TET changes from state to state and from cycle to cycle. Assuming one certificate covers everything is the commonest mistake freshers make.
How TET lines up with B.Ed and D.El.Ed
Think of the teaching qualifications as feeding into different levels. D.El.Ed is the diploma for primary teaching, and B.Ed is the degree for the upper primary and secondary stages. In 2023 the Supreme Court held that B.Ed holders are not eligible for primary-level posts under the rules then in force, so the primary paper is for those with D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or an equivalent qualification. The National Education Policy has also pushed a four-year integrated teacher education programme for new entrants. Older certificates like BTC in Uttar Pradesh still count in the states that ran them.
If you have done D.El.Ed
You are eligible for the primary-level paper, which covers Classes 1 to 5. After a few years of service many D.El.Ed holders pick up a B.Ed so they can move up to the upper primary stage, and that is often the cheapest way to widen your options.
If you have done B.Ed
You sit the paper for Classes 6 to 8, and where a higher paper exists you can aim at senior classes too. A graduation in the subject you want to teach is expected alongside the B.Ed, so check your degree combination before choosing the paper.
Clearing TET is a licence, not a job offer
A TET certificate makes you eligible to apply; it does not put you in a classroom. Hiring happens through separate drives by state commissions, DSSSB, KVS and individual schools, each with its own exam, interview and document checks. Plenty of candidates hold certificates for more than one state to keep options open.
The CTET certificate is valid for life, while the validity of a state TET certificate is set by the state, so check yours. Many people clear TET in their final year of college and then wait for the right vacancy.
TET for teachers already in service
In September 2025 the Supreme Court ruled that TET qualification is required for teachers in schools covered by the Right to Education Act, including those already in service. Teachers with more than five years of service left were told to qualify within a set period or leave the service, while those close to retirement could continue without it but not claim promotion. Minority institutions were left to a larger bench. A later order extended the compliance deadline to August 2028. If you are in service, read the latest order and your state's circular rather than rely on a summary.
If you are still in college, do not wait for your degree certificate to start preparing. The pedagogy and child development sections are the ones people underestimate, and they can be revised alongside your main subjects. Decide early whether you are aiming at state schools or central institutions, because that choice decides which paper you should take first.

Does a B.Ed make TET unnecessary?
No. B.Ed is the qualification, and TET is the eligibility test that comes after it. You need both. Most notifications list the TET certificate as a mandatory condition at the application stage itself.
Who conducts the CTET?
