The Teacher Who Owns the Board Years

A PGT teaches the senior secondary stage, Classes 11 and 12, in Indian schools. This is where students pick their streams, write board exams that shape the next decade and start asking about careers. Schools therefore treat PGT posts as specialist posts. You are not hired to teach science in general. You are hired to teach chemistry, or accountancy, or Bengali, and you are expected to know that subject well enough for the board syllabus.

The ladder is worth keeping straight. A PRT handles the primary years, a TGT takes Classes 6 to 10, and a PGT sits at the top with a heavier timetable in one subject and a heavier set of results to answer for. Pay level, eligibility and responsibility step up at each rung.

Eligibility Is Stricter Than It Looks

The standard requirement is a master's degree in the subject (an MSc for physics or mathematics, an MA for history or English, an MCom for accountancy) with a minimum percentage that differs by recruiting body. Alongside that you need a teaching qualification, typically a B.Ed, and in many states a qualifying TET or an equivalent test. Some recruiters insist on a specific combination, such as post-graduation plus a graduation in the same subject, while a few accept a four-year integrated teacher programme instead.

The subject combination rules trip up more candidates than the syllabus does. If your MA is in a general stream and your BSc is in something else, check which posts your degrees actually make you eligible for. An evening spent reading the advertisement carefully beats a year of preparation for a post you cannot claim.

Where PGT Vacancies Come From

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan runs its own recruitment for PGT posts across Kendriya Vidyalayas, and DSSSB does the same for Delhi government schools. State commissions handle the state side, with Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and others running their own cycles, sometimes with years between them.

Outside government, private schools and junior colleges hire PGTs directly through interviews and demo lessons, often paying more in hand than a government scale but without the same security or pension.

What a PGT Does Beyond Teaching Periods

Take away the classroom and there is still a lot left. A PGT is usually responsible for one board class in a serious way, which means pattern setting, answer-writing practice and the phone calls that arrive after results. The rest depends on the school, but three jobs keep showing up.

Board preparation and evaluation duty

From around December a PGT shifts into revision mode: sample papers, pre-boards and endless discussion on which questions to attempt first. Teachers may also be sent on board evaluation duty, which teaches you exactly what examiners reward.

Practicals and laboratory sessions

For the science and psychology streams, the practical record is the teacher's responsibility as much as the student's. You plan experiments, arrange reagents, supervise record work and sign off on journals. It is unglamorous work that decides whether students walk into the practical exam calm or panicked.

Career counselling and stream choices

Parents ask a PGT the questions they cannot bring themselves to ask a counsellor: which stream after Class 10, whether a drop year hurts, which entrance exams matter. Answering honestly instead of pushing everyone towards engineering earns a reputation that outlasts any result banner.

Preparing for a PGT Selection

Most recruitments have a written test with a general section on teaching aptitude, reasoning and language, and a larger section on your subject at master's level. Some add an interview or a demonstration lesson.

Collect the previous papers of the recruiting body and match them to the syllabus in the notification. Keep your degree certificates, B.Ed and TET certificates and caste or category proofs ready, since documents are checked at the final stage.

If Classes 11 and 12 are where you want to teach, pick your subject early and go deep into it. A master's degree is not just an eligibility box. It is what lets you answer the hard questions students start asking mid-year. Watch the KVS and DSSSB notifications, keep your TET certificate ready, and do not ignore state cycles.

PGT Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of PGT?

Post Graduate Teacher (also written Postgraduate Teacher). It is the designation for a teacher who handles the senior secondary stage, Classes 11 and 12, and who holds a master's degree in the subject along with a teaching qualification such as a B.Ed.

What is the difference between a PGT and a TGT?

A TGT teaches Classes 6 to 10 on the strength of a graduation in the subject. A PGT teaches Classes 11 and 12 with a post-graduation, a narrower subject focus and a higher pay level, and carries more direct responsibility for board results.

Is B.Ed necessary for PGT posts?

For almost every government and KVS post, yes. Some recruiters accept a four-year integrated teacher education degree in its place, and a few contract posts relax the rule, but a B.Ed remains the safest and most widely accepted route.

Can I become a PGT without a master's degree?

Rarely. Some private schools have historically taken a graduate with a B.Ed or long experience for certain subjects, but government recruitment and the National Education Policy era norms point towards a master's degree for senior secondary teaching. Check the specific advertisement.

Do PGTs get paid more than TGTs?

Yes. PGT posts sit at a higher pay level in both central and state structures. Private schools vary, and some pay a premium for experienced board-class teachers regardless of the designation on the appointment letter.

Which subjects can a PGT teach?

Whatever the school offers at Classes 11 and 12: physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, commerce subjects, economics, history, political science, languages, computer science and others. You must hold the master's degree in that subject.
