What the ITBP Is

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is one of India's central armed police forces under the Ministry of Home Affairs, headquartered in New Delhi. It works alongside the BSF, CRPF, CISF, SSB and Assam Rifles.

It was raised on 24 October 1962, in the middle of the war with China, as a force prepared specifically for the Himalayan frontier. Its personnel are called Himveers, and the motto is Shaurya, Dridhata, Karm Nishtha: valour, determination, devotion to duty.

Because it is a police force and not the army, it reports to the Home Ministry, not the Defence Ministry. It handles border vigilance, internal security and disaster duty, and it works with the army wherever the two share a border sector.

Guarding the Line of Actual Control

The ITBP mans border posts along about 3,488 km of the Line of Actual Control, from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh through Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, across Sikkim and into the forests of Arunachal Pradesh.

The terrain sets the terms of service. Many border outposts sit above 14,000 feet, approaches are snowbound for much of the year, and patrols cross glaciers where oxygen is thin and equipment fails in the cold.

Supplies reach many of these posts by mule convoy and helicopter, and units can be cut off from the nearest town for weeks when the passes close for winter.

Troops are acclimatised in stages before deployment, and the force trains in skiing and mountaineering because movement on that border is a technical skill as much as a physical one. ITBP teams have also climbed Everest and other major peaks, and the force runs its own mountaineering and skiing institutes.

Border posts double as the first point of contact for traders and pilgrims. During the months the high routes open, personnel handle identity checks, medical aid and safe passage for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and for other pilgrims and local traders.

Work Beyond the Border

ITBP battalions served in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir from the 1990s, and have been deployed in areas affected by left-wing extremism in central India, including Chhattisgarh.

Disaster relief is a recurring role. During the June 2013 Uttarakhand floods, ITBP teams were among the first on the ground, reaching stranded pilgrims and moving thousands of people to safety on foot and by helicopter.

The force was also present in eastern Ladakh during the 2020 stand-off with China, since its posts lie on that very frontier.

In 2020 it was pulled into a different emergency: ITBP ran the Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre at Chhatarpur in Delhi, one of the first very large isolation facilities for coronavirus patients in the country.

Recruitment and Life in the Force

Officers enter as Assistant Commandants through the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces exam. Sub-Inspectors are recruited through the SSC CPO examination, and constables through ITBP's own recruitment drives, which combine a physical efficiency test, a written exam and a medical check.

Posts are advertised on the force's recruitment page, and eligibility (age, educational qualification, height and chest standards) differs by post, so read the notification for the year you apply. Candidates from hill and tribal areas often have relaxed physical standards.

Basic training covers drill, trekking, firing and high-altitude routines before posting. Women serve in the force in operational and support roles.

The job means long spells away from family in difficult terrain, set against central government pay scales, service benefits and the rank structure of a central armed force, which runs from Constable up to Director General.

Which Force Guards Which Border

The BSF covers the frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh, the ITBP the Chinese frontier along the LAC, and the Sashastra Seema Bal the borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

The Assam Rifles works the Myanmar border and the northeast, the CRPF handles internal security and counter-insurgency, and the CISF protects airports, ports, power plants and metros.

One confusing point: SSB means both Sashastra Seema Bal and the Services Selection Board, so the context tells you which is meant. The ITBP should also not be confused with the army's own units on the LAC. The ministry named and the border named in a news report are the reliable clues to which force is being discussed.

The ITBP's job is defined by altitude and geography: long postings, freezing winters and constant patrolling on a border that never quite settles. Knowing the name, the 1962 origin and the Home Ministry link answers most exam questions on it.
