Where the phrase MIA comes from
Missing in Action describes a person whose fate is unknown after a military operation: not confirmed dead, not confirmed captured, simply unaccounted for. It became an official status in the world wars and stayed in use through Korea and Vietnam, when large numbers of service members could not be accounted for after battle.
The United States runs a dedicated agency whose job is searching for such remains decades later, using wartime records and battlefield excavations. MIA, KIA, POW and AWOL are not the same thing

MIA in everyday language
Outside the army the term has been borrowed freely. Commentators say a cricketer has gone MIA when he is dropped from a squad; teammates say the same about someone who stops turning up to practice. On gaming servers an MIA teammate is the one who disconnected mid-round. In offices and group chats, he has been MIA all week simply means unreachable.
The military weight has not disappeared, though. In Indian news coverage the term still turns up around soldiers missing after an attack, an avalanche or a helicopter crash, and it carries far more gravity there than it does in a WhatsApp thread.
How an MIA status is finally resolved
A case stays open because the evidence is missing, not because nobody is looking. The investigation starts with the last confirmed location and the unit records: who was where, and when. Survivor statements and any communications are cross-checked against that timeline.
Where a body could not be recovered at the time, recovery missions can run years or even decades later, using wartime documents, aerial photographs and, increasingly, DNA matching against samples given by family members. Occasionally new testimony reopens a case: somebody identifies a burial site, or an archive is declassified.
When remains are identified, the family receives a formal notification and the status changes to killed in action or recovered. Until then the file stays exactly where it was: unresolved.
