What the ACP Rank Means

The Assistant Commissioner of Police is a senior rank in police forces that work on the commissionerate system, such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Lucknow.

It sits immediately above Inspector and below Deputy Commissioner of Police. An ACP normally heads a division or sub-division made up of several police stations.

In districts that still run the older system the same slot is filled by a Deputy Superintendent of Police or Sub-Divisional Police Officer. The work is near-identical; only the title changes with the system.

In everyday Indian usage, ACP is the city police rank a complainant is usually directed to when a police station cannot resolve a matter on its own.

How the Ranks Line Up

Commissionerate system: Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner of Police heading a zone, an ACP below each of them, then Inspectors in charge of stations and Sub-Inspectors handling investigation.

District system: Superintendent of Police, Additional SP, then a Deputy SP or SDPO at subdivision level, followed by Inspector, Sub-Inspector and Assistant Sub-Inspector at the station.

Officers of the Indian Police Service usually serve as Additional SP or ACP early in their field career. In state forces, ACP and DySP posts go both to direct recruits selected by the state public service commission and to Inspectors promoted on seniority.

Pay follows the 7th Pay Commission matrix, with ACP and DySP placed at the same level (Level 10, starting at ₹56,100 basic), plus allowances that vary by city.

How You Become an ACP

Route one is the UPSC Civil Services examination. Indian Police Service officers train at the Sardar Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, then move into field postings around this rank.

Route two is direct recruitment as DySP or ACP through the state public service commission exam, open to graduates within the age limits set by each state. These officers train at the state police academy.

Route three runs inside the force: constable to Sub-Inspector, then Inspector, then promotion to ACP or DySP on seniority and departmental criteria. The time this takes varies widely by state.

State service rules treat ACP and DySP as interchangeable for pay and seniority, so the title an officer carries depends more on where the state has placed them than on any difference in rank.

In Delhi Police, a Union Territory force under the Home Ministry, ACP posts are held both by promoted inspectors and by officers of the civil-service cadre that serves Delhi and other Union Territories.

What an ACP Does Day to Day

An ACP supervises the police stations under the division: reviewing charge sheets, directing investigations, checking case diaries and making sure arrests follow procedure.

Public order work dominates the calendar: processions, festivals, political rallies and cricket crowds, with the ACP on the spot deciding deployment and response.

Add night duties in the control room, coordination with other agencies, monitoring the division's crime figures, and hearing public grievances, which is often where the day disappears.

In Mumbai an ACP heads a division under a zonal DCP. In Delhi the division is a group of police stations, and the ACP is the supervisory officer on every serious case from the area. For serious crimes, the ACP often personally takes over or closely guides the investigation.

Beyond routine duty, an ACP signs off on many permissions and records: licences for processions and loudspeakers, character verification reports, and recommendations to the DCP on preventive action against repeat offenders. Citizens meet the ACP most often as the second level of appeal when a station house officer does not register or progress a complaint, so knowing the rank helps you escalate in the right order.

ACP's Other Meanings Outside the Police

Outside policing, ACP most often means aluminium composite panel, the flat cladding sheet used on building facades, shop fronts and signage across Indian cities: two thin aluminium skins around a plastic core.
