The force that stands at the fence

BSF is the Border Security Force, a central armed police force that guards India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. It works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the Ministry of Defence, which is why it is called a police force and not part of the Army.

It is often described as the first line of defence of Indian territory, because its jawans are the ones physically on the border, day and night, in the desert of Rajasthan, the marshes of Gujarat and the river country of Bengal.

Why it exists: a gap exposed in 1965

Before 1965, border protection was left to the armed police of each border state, with little coordination between them. When Pakistan attacked posts in the Kutch region in April 1965, the weakness of that arrangement became obvious.

After the war, the government created the BSF in December 1965 as one unified central agency whose job was guarding the international borders. K. F. Rustamji of the Indian Police Service became its first Director General.

It started with a small number of battalions and has grown into one of the largest border guarding forces in the world, with its own air wing, water wing and artillery regiment. Exact strength changes, so use the official BSF website for current numbers.

What the job looks like in peace and in war

In peacetime the work is guarding the border, preventing smuggling and illegal entry or exit, stopping infiltration, collecting trans-border intelligence, and giving people in border villages a sense of safety. Farmers whose fields lie right next to the fence see the BSF more than any other government agency, and some need a pass to reach their own land.

In wartime the force holds ground in assigned sectors and can support the Army. In 1971 its units took part in several operations of the war, and it trained and supported the Mukti Bahini before the war began.

Along the riverine border in the east and in Sunderbans creeks, the water wing patrols by boat. In the desert, camel patrols are a regular sight.

Border villagers also rely on the force for medical camps and community programmes in remote areas, and women now serve in the BSF as constables and officers. These activities are part of why the BSF is better known in border districts than almost any other force.

BSF, CRPF and ITBP: do not mix them up

Several forces carry the word force or police in the name, and exams love to test the difference. The BSF guards the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders. The ITBP is associated with the Tibet border, while the CRPF mainly supports state police in internal security.

A memory trick: BSF equals border, always. If a question mentions the western or eastern border, the answer is very likely BSF.

The Assam Rifles guards the Myanmar border and the SSB guards the Nepal and Bhutan borders, so those are separate again.

Another fact that shows up in general knowledge papers is the 1971 war, where the BSF played a part in the events that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

Thinking of joining?

Recruitment is notified officially for posts like constables and for officer-level entry, and there are also posts for tradesmen. Exact age limits, physical standards, medical rules and exam patterns change from one notification to the next, so rely only on the current notice on the official BSF or government recruitment website.

Be careful of anyone who offers a seat for money. Genuine recruitment does not need an agent.

Start your fitness preparation early, since running and physical tests are usually part of the selection. A steady daily routine over several months works better than a rush before the date. Keep your documents ready: educational certificates, domicile and caste certificates where applicable, and identity proof.

The motto of the force is Jeevan Paryant Kartavya, which means duty until death. It is often quoted in interviews and general knowledge quizzes, along with the fact that the BSF celebrates its raising day on 1 December every year.

Selection for constable posts usually includes a physical efficiency test, a physical standards test, a written exam and a medical. For officers, a competitive exam conducted by the UPSC for central armed police forces is the usual route, so check the official notice for dates.

The one line to remember: BSF is Border Security Force, a Home Ministry force born out of the 1965 war and posted on the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders.
