ERO Full Form
Electoral Registration Officer
What does ERO stand for? A government term, explained.
ERO Full Form in English, letter by letter
ERO stands for Electoral Registration Officer, the official who prepares and updates the voter list of one assembly constituency in India.
ERO Full Form in Indian Languages
ERO in Indian elections means Electoral Registration Officer, the official who adds, corrects and deletes names on the voter list of one assembly constituency. A Form 6 application ends up on this officer's desk. Here is the name in six Indian languages.
Who the Electoral Registration Officer is
The ERO full form is Electoral Registration Officer. For every assembly constituency, the Election Commission of India designates an ERO, in consultation with the state government, under Section 13B of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
The post is usually held by a serving government officer, such as a Tehsildar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate or, in cities, a municipal officer. The person is not a political appointee, and normally continues revenue or administrative work alongside the electoral duties.
Above the ERO sits the District Election Officer, normally the District Magistrate or Collector, and above that the Chief Electoral Officer of the state. The Election Commission of India sits at the top of that chain.
What the ERO does
The core job is preparing and revising the electoral roll of the constituency. Names are added for new voters, removed when a voter dies or moves away, and corrected when the spelling, photo or date of birth on the roll is wrong.
Claims and objections are checked on the ground by a Booth Level Officer, who visits the address and checks documents before the ERO decides. The ERO can also order a hearing when a claim is disputed.
Aadhaar linking is voluntary. Form 6B lets a voter share an Aadhaar number to help remove duplicate entries, but a voter without Aadhaar can give other listed documents.
The ERO's office also approves the Electors Photo Identity Card, the EPIC, and organises registration drives before elections, including at colleges where first-time voters cluster.
How to reach your ERO: forms and portals
Four forms cover most requests. Form 6 is for new registration, Form 7 for objection to or deletion of a name, Form 8 for correction of entries or shifting residence, and Form 6A for overseas Indian electors.
All of them can be filed online through the Election Commission's voters' service portal or the Voter Helpline app, and in person at the ERO's office or with the BLO. You need age proof, address proof and a photograph.
Age rules changed recently. A citizen must be 18 or older on the qualifying date, and since the amendment to the Representation of the People Act the roll has four qualifying dates a year: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. A young person no longer has to wait a full year after turning 18, and can apply in advance to be enrolled on the next date.
ERO, DEO, CEO and BLO: acronyms that get mixed up
The ERO handles registration for one constituency. The DEO, or District Election Officer, coordinates elections in the whole district. The CEO, or Chief Electoral Officer, is a state-level post, and the BLO is the field worker who verifies claims door to door.
None of these roles counts votes. Counting is run by a Returning Officer appointed for the specific election, under the supervision of the ECI. The registration machinery runs continuously, well before and after election season.
In many constituencies the ERO and the Returning Officer are the same person, but the two jobs are legally separate. Registration and polling are different tasks under different provisions of the law.
To track an application, note the reference number given after you submit Form 6 and check the status on the portal or the Voter Helpline app. Most applications are decided within a few weeks, though busy periods before elections can take longer. Keep your mobile number updated so the BLO can reach you for verification, and keep a photo of your address proof ready.
For anything involving your voter list, such as a new card, a corrected name or a duplicate EPIC, the Electoral Registration Officer's office is the authority that decides, and the online portal and Voter Helpline app now take most applications.
