CEO Full Form in Indian Languages
CEO is used in English across India. Each card shows the transliteration and the formal native term in brackets.
The person who answers to the board
CEO is Chief Executive Officer, the top-ranking officer who manages a company or a non-profit organisation. The CEO reports to the board of directors and is responsible for carrying out the goals and strategy the board has set.
CEOs are found in public and private companies, non-profits and even some state-owned enterprises. Indian-born executives such as Sundar Pichai at Google and Satya Nadella at Microsoft have held the post at global companies.
What a CEO decides, and what they do not
The job is mostly about decisions on strategy and policy, leading the senior team and speaking for the company to the press, investors and employees. Day to day, a CEO may spend more time in meetings than on any product.
Specific responsibilities are set by the board, often in a formal delegation of authority. In a large firm, the CEO leans on specialists such as the CFO for money and the CTO for technology.
CEO, managing director and chairman are not the same
A chief executive is also called a managing director in some places. In India the managing director is a formal position under company law, and in many family-run groups the chairman and the MD are separate people.
So a chairman heads the board, while the CEO or MD runs the business. The Companies Act, 2013 lists the CEO, managing director, CFO and company secretary among the key managerial personnel of a company. Annual reports tell you who holds which title.
A CEO and the board in practice
Think of a listed company's year. The board approves the annual budget and the strategy. The CEO proposes them, then spends the year making them happen: hiring leaders, closing deals, watching the numbers each quarter. At the annual general meeting, shareholders hear from the chairman and often the CEO.
If results go badly the board can replace the CEO, and CEOs also step down on their own. That accountability is what separates the post from an owner who simply runs his own shop.
Other CEOs you may run into
At election time, CEO means Chief Electoral Officer, who oversees elections in a state or union territory under the Election Commission of India. In a district, the Chief Executive Officer of a Zila Parishad is another official using the same short form.
These are public posts, so read the notice to see which one is meant.
How people actually end up in the top chair
There is no fixed degree for it. Some CEOs rise through one function such as sales, finance or operations, running a plant or a region before they get the top job. Others are founders who started the company, and in many Indian business groups the post passes within the family. Boards also hire outsiders when they want a fresh direction.
An MBA helps some careers, but the board mostly looks at track record: did you grow a business, lead a team and handle a bad year. If you want to head a company one day, take roles early that make you responsible for a profit or loss number.
CEO pay varies enormously with company size and sector, so treat any single salary figure you see online with caution. Annual reports of listed companies show what they actually pay.
Next time a headline says a company has a new CEO, look at who the CEO reports to. The answer is the board, and that explains most of what the job is.
