Electors Photo Identity Card
What does EPIC stand for? A government term, explained.
EPIC Full Form in English, letter by letter
EPIC is the Electors Photo Identity Card, the voter ID issued by the Election Commission of India to people on the electoral roll.
EPIC Full Form in Indian Languages
EPIC is the Election Commission's code for the Electors Photo Identity Card, known to most Indians as the voter ID card. It is shown below in six Indian languages.
What the EPIC Card Is
The Electors Photo Identity Card, often written Electoral Photo Identity Card in everyday use, is issued by the Election Commission of India to people whose names are in the electoral roll. It carries the voter's photograph, name, age or date of birth, address, part and constituency details and a unique EPIC number.
The card is not proof of citizenship. It is also not compulsory to vote if your name is in the roll, because what matters legally is that your name is on the list of that polling station. The card is simply the easiest way of showing who you are at the booth.
Photo identity cards for voters began in the early 1990s as a way to curb impersonation, and the card has since become one of the most widely held identity documents in India. It is accepted as photo ID for opening a bank account, getting a SIM or booking travel, though some of these uses need an address proof as well.
How to Get an EPIC
The steps start with the electoral roll. A first-time voter files Form 6 on the Voter Service Portal or the Voters' Helpline app, or at the office of the Electoral Registration Officer. Form 8 is used to correct details, shift residence or ask for a replacement card, and Form 7 is used to object to or delete an entry. A Booth Level Officer usually verifies the address, after which the name is added and the card is issued.
For age, a citizen must be 18 on the qualifying date. Earlier there was only 1 January every year. Since 2022 there are four qualifying dates in a year, 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, so a young person no longer has to wait for the next January to register.
Documents for Form 6 include a recent photograph, age proof such as a birth certificate or Class 10 marksheet and address proof such as Aadhaar, a bank passbook or a utility bill. You can also link Aadhaar with the EPIC through Form 6B, which is voluntary.
e-EPIC and Voting Day
The Election Commission launched e-EPIC in January 2021. It is a digital copy of the card in PDF format, with a QR code, that can be downloaded from the voter portal by those whose mobile number is registered and kept on a phone or printed.
At the polling station, carry the EPIC or one of the other documents approved by the Commission. These include Aadhaar, MGNREGA job card, bank or post office passbook with photograph, driving licence, PAN card, passport, a service identity card of a central or state government body or a public sector unit, and a pension document with photograph. The polling officer checks your name in the roll before you vote.
Practical Checks Before an Election
Search for your name in the electoral roll well before polling day, on the Voter Service Portal or by calling the voter helpline, since the card alone does not guarantee that your name is on the list. If your name is missing, apply by Form 6 immediately to a Booth Level Officer or online.
Fix a wrong spelling, an old photograph or a change of address through Form 8 as soon as you notice it. A mismatch between the card and the roll is a common reason for delay at the booth.
The EPIC is only useful if the electoral roll behind it is correct. Check your entry before every election, keep the card or e-EPIC ready, and file Form 8 quickly if anything on the card is wrong.
