BLO Full Form
Booth Level Officer
What does BLO stand for? A government term, explained.
BLO Full Form in English, letter by letter
A BLO is the official assigned to a polling station who maintains and verifies the electoral roll for the voters of that part of the constituency.
BLO Full Form in Indian Languages
The BLO is the person who visits your house to check voter details. Booth Level Officer is the full form, shown below in six Indian languages.
Who a Booth Level Officer Is
BLO stands for Booth Level Officer. Each polling station area is assigned a BLO by the District Election Officer, working under the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the assembly constituency. Her or his main job is to keep the electoral roll for that area accurate.
A polling station is normally set up for roughly 1,000 to 1,200 electors, so a BLO usually covers about that many voters. Most BLOs are serving government staff such as teachers, anganwadi workers or panchayat and municipal employees, who take this up as an additional duty.
What a BLO Does During Roll Revision
The BLO visits households, checks who has moved, died or turned 18, and collects forms. Form 6 is for a new voter, Form 7 for deletion or objection, and Form 8 for correction of details or shifting of residence. The BLO verifies the claim in the field and passes it to the ERO, who decides.
The rolls are revised before elections and on a regular schedule. Since 2023 there are four qualifying dates in a year (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October), so a person who turns 18 can apply in advance instead of waiting for a single date each year. In 2025 the Election Commission also ordered Special Intensive Revisions in some states, where BLOs distributed and collected enumeration forms from every household.
BLO Duties Before and on Polling Day
Before polling, the BLO distributes voter information slips, helps people find their name and serial number in the roll, and assists elderly and disabled voters. The BLO also records those eligible for home voting where the rules allow it.
On polling day the booth is run by the presiding officer and polling staff. The BLO helps with identification of local voters and is an easy contact for queries. The card behind all this is the EPIC, the voter ID, which the BLO helps correct or replace through the proper forms.
The Chain of Authority
The BLO reports to the ERO, usually a deputy collector or sub-divisional officer. Above that come the District Election Officer, the Chief Electoral Officer of the state and the Election Commission of India. Supervisors check a sample of the BLO's work in the field.
A BLO is expected to be neutral and act only on records and verified claims. Failing to perform election duty without a valid reason can attract disciplinary action under election law, which is why teachers on BLO duty are often busy in revision season.
How to Reach Your BLO and Fix Your Entry
Find your polling station and BLO details on the Election Commission's voter services portal or the Voter Helpline app. The national voter helpline number is 1950. Check your name in the roll before every election, not on polling week.
If your name is missing, file Form 6 online or hand it to the BLO. For a wrong spelling or photo, use Form 8. For a deceased or shifted family member, use Form 7. Keep the acknowledgement number, since the correction needs verification before the roll is published.
The roll that decides who can vote is built house by house, and the BLO does that work. If something about your voter record is wrong, he or she is the first person to approach.
