What a PAN Actually Is

A PAN is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier: five letters, four digits and one final letter. It is issued by the Income Tax Department, which works under the Central Board of Direct Taxes. It does not change. You can switch jobs, move cities or marry, and the same number follows you for life, tying your salary, interest, property and investments to one tax record.

The structure carries meaning. The first three characters are a letter series, the fourth shows the type of holder (P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu undivided family, F for a firm, T for a trust), and the fifth is the first letter of the holder's surname, or of the name for entities. Four digits follow, and the last letter is a check character, which is why one mistyped character makes a PAN invalid.

Where You Must Quote PAN

Rule 114B of the Income-tax Rules lists the transactions that need a PAN. Examples are cash deposits above ₹50,000 in a bank in one day, cash payments above ₹2 lakh for goods or services, and the purchase or sale of immovable property above ₹10 lakh. Opening a bank account, buying securities and taking a demat account also require it. Salary payments and TDS deductions are recorded against your PAN so that tax deducted reaches your own account.

Not quoting it has consequences. A deductor may have to deduct tax at a higher rate, up to 20 percent, under Section 206AA when no valid PAN is given. A penalty of ₹10,000 can apply under Section 272B for failing to quote or for quoting a wrong PAN. Thresholds and rules change, so check the current Income-tax Rules and the Finance Act of the year.

How to Get a PAN and Link It

The income tax portal can allot an instant e-PAN using Aadhaar OTP verification, free of charge, and the digital number is delivered as a PDF. For a physical card you apply through a service provider such as NSDL or UTIITSL with proof of identity, address and date of birth. Dispatch normally takes a couple of weeks.

Minors can hold a PAN through a parent or guardian, and so can companies, firms, trusts and NRIs. There is no expiry, and you do not need a new PAN because you moved. Only the details on record need updating, which is done on the same portal or through a service provider.

Linking PAN with Aadhaar is mandatory under Section 139AA. Those who linked late paid a ₹1,000 fee, and a PAN that is not linked can become inoperative, which means refunds and many financial services get blocked. Check the status on the income tax portal.

Verifying a PAN and Reading Your Records

Verification is quick and free. The income tax portal lets anyone check whether a name and PAN match the department's records, and banks validate the number in real time during KYC. DigiLocker can hold an electronic copy that is accepted as valid.

Mutual funds, insurance policies and demat accounts ask for PAN at opening, and every interest or dividend credit is reported against it. Your Annual Information Statement shows what has been reported, so reading it once a year helps you spot an error or a transaction that is not yours before filing a return.

PAN Versus TAN, Aadhaar and Other Look-Alikes

PAN is not a TAN, which deductors use to track TDS, and it is not a bank account number. Aadhaar proves identity, while PAN tracks tax liability. Confusing the two is common, but both are now needed together for most taxpayers.

In computing, PAN also means Personal Area Network, the short-range bubble around you in which a phone, smartwatch and earbuds exchange data over Bluetooth. Context decides the meaning: an article about cable lengths is about networking, not tax.

Also keep in mind the PAN card and the e-PAN are equally valid. A printed laminated card is useful for convenience, but a PDF e-PAN carries the same weight.

Common PAN Problems and Fixes

Name or date-of-birth mismatches between PAN and Aadhaar are the commonest reason a link request fails. Correct whichever record is wrong first, then try again. A lost card does not need a new number: you can download the e-PAN or request a reprint.

Holding more than one PAN is illegal, and the penalty under Section 272B applies. If you ever receive a second one by mistake, surrender it to the Income Tax Department. Never share a PAN scan casually, because it can be misused for loans or fake accounts.

Your PAN works as the index of your financial records, more than as a piece of plastic. Check the name, date of birth and father's name on the income tax portal now and then, because a mismatch can surface later as a failed link or a delayed refund.

PAN Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of PAN card?

PAN stands for Permanent Account Number. It is a ten-character alphanumeric code on the card issued by the Income Tax Department, and the same number stays with a taxpayer for life.

How many characters are in a PAN and what do they mean?

Ten characters: five letters, four digits and a final letter. The fourth character identifies the holder type, the fifth is the first letter of the surname or name, and the last letter is a check character used to spot typing errors.

When was PAN introduced in India?

PAN has existed under the Income-tax Act since the 1970s. The ten-character format now in use began in the 1990s, after which quoting PAN became compulsory for a growing list of transactions.

Is PAN mandatory if I do not pay income tax?

Not always, but you need one for many financial transactions above the notified limits, for opening a demat account and for many investments. Most working adults end up needing a PAN.

Can I hold two PAN cards?

No. Holding more than one PAN is not allowed, and a penalty can apply. If you have two, surrender the extra one to the Income Tax Department.

Does PAN mean something else outside income tax?

Yes. In technology, a PAN is a Personal Area Network, the short-range network formed by Bluetooth devices. The topic makes clear which sense is meant.
