What is actually stored on the chip

A SIM is a secure microprocessor under a gold-coloured contact plate, with its own tiny operating system separate from your phone's. It holds your IMSI, the identity of up to 15 digits that lets a network recognise you, and a secret key called Ki used to prove you are who you claim to be. The 19 or 20 digit ICCID printed on the card is the card's own serial number and starts with 89, the telecom industry identifier.

Older SIMs also stored SMS messages and a couple of hundred phonebook entries. Modern phones keep contacts in their own memory or in the cloud, and what matters on the card is the credential that signs you on to 4G and 5G networks.

The card also holds the message centre number your texts are routed through, which is why texting works the moment a network bar appears, with no setup.

From full-size SIM to nano-SIM and eSIM

The original card was the size of a credit card when the standards arrived in 1991. It shrank to the mini-SIM (25 x 15 mm), micro-SIM (15 x 12 mm) and nano-SIM (12.3 x 8.8 mm) as handsets got thinner. The chip is the same in all four, which is why a plastic adapter lets a nano-SIM work in an older slot.

An eSIM is the same credential built into the phone's motherboard and loaded over the air. Jio, Airtel and Vi support eSIMs on compatible handsets in India, which helps if you want two numbers without a second tray. Smartwatches with calling depend on it because there is no tray at all.

If you travel abroad often, a data eSIM bought for the destination is usually cheaper than international roaming on your Indian number. The Indian number stays on your physical SIM for calls and OTPs. Before switching to an eSIM, note that your old physical SIM stops working once the eSIM is activated for that number, so do it where you have a Wi-Fi connection.

How the network proves the phone is yours

When a handset connects, the network sends a random challenge. The SIM signs it using the key stored inside and returns the answer, and the operator checks it against its own records. The key never leaves the card, so recording the radio signal does not reveal it.

This is why a connection is issued only after an identity check. In India a new SIM is verified through Aadhaar e-KYC or other approved documents at the operator's store or an authorised retailer, and the Department of Telecommunications' Sanchar Saathi portal lets you see the mobile connections registered against your ID.

Because every connection traces back to an ID, giving a SIM to a stranger is risky. If it is later used for fraud, the registered owner is the first person investigators contact. Disconnect any number you no longer use, and keep your KYC details to yourself. A single ID can hold only a limited number of mobile connections, so a Sanchar Saathi check is useful before you apply for a new one.

PIN, PUK and what locks permanently

The PIN protects the card itself, usually four digits, and a wrong entry three times makes the card ask for the eight-digit PUK printed on the card carrier that came with it. Ten wrong PUK attempts lock the SIM for good, and the only fix is a replacement issued against your ID proof at the operator's store.

SIM swap: the fraud that empties bank accounts

A fraudster who knows enough about you persuades a store or call centre to issue a replacement SIM for your number. Your handset suddenly loses signal, theirs gets it, and every one-time password for your bank account reaches them instead of you.

Never share an OTP or PUK with anyone who calls. If your phone loses network for no reason and stays that way, call the operator from another phone and your bank immediately. To move numbers legitimately, send PORT followed by your number to 1900 and give the UPC only to the operator you are joining.

A SIM is better understood as a small security device than as a storage card. It authenticates your handset, holds no meaningful personal files, and is worth auditing now and then for connections issued in your name that you never asked for.

SIM Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of SIM?

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is the smart card inside a phone that stores your network credentials and authenticates you to the telecom operator. It is not a general memory chip.

What is the difference between a SIM and an eSIM?

The credentials are the same, the form differs. A physical SIM is a removable card, while an eSIM is a chip fixed in the phone and programmed remotely by the operator. Many phones take an eSIM and a nano-SIM together.

Does a SIM card store photos and WhatsApp data?

No. Photos, chats and app data live in the phone's storage or the cloud. A SIM holds subscriber keys, your IMSI and, on older cards, a few SMS or contacts, measured in kilobytes.

What should I do if my SIM shows PUK locked?

Enter the eight-digit PUK printed on the SIM card carrier. Three wrong PINs trigger the PUK prompt, and ten wrong PUKs lock the card permanently. After that you need a fresh SIM from the operator with your ID proof.

How do I check how many SIMs are issued on my ID?

Open the Sanchar Saathi portal of the Department of Telecommunications, enter your mobile number and verify with an OTP. It lists connections linked to your ID, and you can report any you do not recognise.

Can I use the same SIM in a new phone?

Yes, if the size fits. Switch the phone off, move the card to the new handset and it will register on the network again. Your number, plan and balance stay with the operator, not the phone.
