MEA Full Form in Indian Languages
MEA shows up on passport forms and in foreign policy news. Ministry of External Affairs is written below in Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil and Gujarati.
The full form and the mandate
The MEA full form is Ministry of External Affairs. It is headed by the Minister of External Affairs and staffed largely by officers of the Indian Foreign Service. The senior-most civil servant in the ministry is the Foreign Secretary. The ministry manages India's relations with other countries and international organisations, and with foreign missions in New Delhi.
Its work covers bilateral diplomacy, trade and economic engagement, development assistance to partner countries, India's role at the United Nations, and the welfare of Indian citizens and people of Indian origin abroad. Jawaharlal Nehru held the external affairs portfolio himself until 1964, which shaped the ministry's early approach.
Headquarters and leadership
The ministry works out of South Block on Raisina Hill in New Delhi, in the same area as the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Defence. S. Jaishankar, a career diplomat who earlier served as Foreign Secretary, has been the Minister of External Affairs since May 2019.
Ministers of State and a set of secretaries and divisions look after regions and subjects, such as West Asia, Europe, the Americas, multilateral affairs, protocol and consular services.
India's missions abroad
India keeps embassies and high commissions in many countries, consulates in major cities and permanent missions at the United Nations and other bodies. These missions handle visas, help for Indian citizens in trouble, trade promotion, cultural events and political talks with the host government. The current list of missions is on the ministry's website.
Passport and consular services run through the ministry's Consular, Passport and Visa division. Applications are made through the Passport Seva portal and the mPassport Seva app, with appointments at Passport Seva Kendras and, in some places, post office centres.
Officers join through the Civil Services Examination, where the Indian Foreign Service is one of the services a high-ranking candidate can choose. After the common foundation course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, they train at the Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi, including a foreign language.
Not every passport service sits in the MEA's head office. Regional Passport Offices in each state handle applications, police verification is done by the state police, and Passport Seva Kendras run the front desk. If your file is delayed, start by checking its status online, then contact the Regional Passport Office that holds it before writing to the ministry.
How the MEA touches ordinary life
Most Indians meet the ministry before they travel: the passport application, police verification and visa paperwork all connect to its systems. Documents such as degree certificates and birth records that are needed abroad are attested or given an apostille by the MEA, usually after a State Home Department or similar authentication first.
In emergencies the ministry coordinates evacuation. The Vande Bharat Mission in 2020 brought home lakhs of Indians stranded abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students, workers and travellers are advised to register with the nearest Indian mission so help can reach them quickly.
India at the UN and in the neighbourhood
The ministry represents India in multilateral forums. India has served eight terms on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, most recently in 2021 and 2022, and has announced a bid for the 2028-29 term. It takes part in groupings such as the G20, BRICS, BIMSTEC, the Quad and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Regionally, its Neighbourhood First approach covers trade and transport links with Bangladesh, development projects in Nepal and the Maldives, a tense Line of Control with Pakistan and long-running border friction with China. Development aid, lines of credit and scholarships for students from partner countries are also MEA instruments.
Checking MEA information yourself
The ministry publishes press briefings, visit announcements, treaties and travel advisories on mea.gov.in. For passports, use only the official Passport Seva portal and app, because fake sites charge extra fees. For attestation and apostille, follow the steps listed on the MEA's own pages, and keep the receipt numbers.
The ministry sits in South Block, but its work reaches anyone who applies for a passport or needs help abroad. For any paperwork, use the official MEA and Passport Seva sites.
