What ABHA is and why it exists

ABHA is a 14-digit number issued under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which the National Health Authority runs. The mission was launched nationwide on 27 September 2021. The number was first called the Health ID and was later renamed ABHA. It identifies you across health providers, much as PAN does for tax.

Before ABHA, records sat in separate places: an X-ray in one hospital, blood reports at a lab, discharge papers in a file at home. Changing doctors or cities meant carrying folders or repeating tests. ABHA links the records you choose, so that a doctor can view them when you allow it.

ABHA is an identifier, not a database of your health. The reports remain with the hospital or lab that created them.

How to create and use your ABHA number

You can create one free at abha.abdm.gov.in or through the ABHA app, using your Aadhaar number or your mobile number, and confirming with an OTP. The number is generated immediately and a digital card with a QR code can be downloaded as a PDF. Many hospitals and ABDM-registered facilities will also create it at the registration desk.

You can also choose an ABHA address, written like yourname@abdm, which is easier to share than 14 digits. The card shows your number, name and date of birth.

At a participating hospital, you give the number or scan the QR code at registration. The visit is linked to your ABHA, and later you can allow a doctor to see earlier prescriptions and reports by approving a request in the app.

What changes for patients

Someone with diabetes or a heart condition who sees several specialists gains most. Every report is reachable without a file bag, and in an emergency a doctor can look at history, allergies and current medicines. This can reduce prescribing mistakes and repeated tests.

Records also travel when you do: a report from a hospital in Mumbai can be viewed by a doctor in Delhi if both are on the network and you consent. ABHA is also used by government health schemes, including PM-JAY, to identify beneficiaries.

Not every facility is on the network yet. Private chains, government hospitals and dispensaries under CGHS or ECHS are joining at different speeds. An ABHA is useful, but you should still keep copies of important reports.

Families gain too. A parent can create and manage an ABHA for a child, and records of vaccinations and childhood illnesses can be kept in one place for later visits to a paediatrician.

Privacy, consent and control

A common worry is that the government can read your medical files. ABHA does not keep your health records in one central place. Hospitals hold their own records, and ABHA provides the link. Records move only after you approve a consent request in the app, and you can withdraw permission later.

In ABDM language, a hospital that shares records is a Health Information Provider and a doctor or clinic that reads them is a Health Information User. Each exchange is recorded against your consent, so the app shows what was shared, when and with whom.

Your share of the care is simple: never give your OTP to a caller, do not share app passwords, and treat the ABHA card with the same care as your Aadhaar. If you get a call claiming to link your ABHA to a benefit and asking for an OTP, it is a scam.

ABHA, Aadhaar and other IDs compared

ABHA does not replace Aadhaar. Aadhaar proves who you are, while ABHA connects your health records. You can create an ABHA with a mobile number alone, but Aadhaar-based creation is the faster route and is accepted for more services.

ABHA is also different from the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card. PM-JAY is health insurance cover for eligible families, while ABHA is only an identity for records. Having one does not give you the other.

It takes a few minutes and costs nothing, so creating an ABHA before you need it is sensible. Keep paper copies of key reports regardless, because not every clinic you visit will be on the network.

ABHA Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of ABHA?

ABHA stands for Ayushman Bharat Health Account. It is a free 14-digit health ID issued under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission that lets you link and share medical records digitally.

How do I create an ABHA number?

Visit abha.abdm.gov.in or use the ABHA app, register with your Aadhaar or mobile number, verify with an OTP, and the number is generated at once. You can then download the card as a PDF.

Is ABHA mandatory for treatment?

No. It is voluntary, and a hospital cannot refuse treatment for lack of it. It only makes your records easier to access when you visit different providers.

What information does ABHA store?

It holds your identity details such as name, date of birth and the way you registered. Medical records stay with hospitals and labs, and are linked to your ABHA only after you give consent.

Is ABHA the same as the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card?

No. PM-JAY gives insurance cover for eligible families, while ABHA is a health ID for records. They are separate, although the two systems are connected.

Is my health data safe with ABHA?

Records are not kept in a single central store, they move only with your consent, and you can revoke access. The main risk is ordinary carelessness, such as sharing an OTP, so guard it.
