The three letters that matter when someone collapses

CPR is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is what you do when a person's heart has stopped or they have stopped breathing: you push hard on the centre of the chest to keep blood moving, and trained people may add breaths.

Take a person who falls on a railway platform or in a wedding hall and does not respond. The minutes before an ambulance arrives are the ones CPR is for.

What it does and what it does not do

This surprises people who learnt CPR from films. On its own, CPR is unlikely to restart the heart. Its job is to push some oxygenated blood to the brain and heart and delay damage until proper treatment arrives.

The brain is very sensitive to loss of blood flow. Damage can begin within a few minutes, and the chances of survival fall with every minute without help. Very cold conditions, as in some near-drownings in icy water, can give the brain a little longer. That narrow window is why early compressions matter.

It also explains why waiting for an ambulance with your hands in your lap is the wrong call. Compressions that are imperfect but started early are better than perfect ones started late, and you can swap with another bystander when you get tired.

To restore a normal heart rhythm, a shock from a defibrillator is often needed, and it works only for certain rhythms. This is why you see AED boxes in airports, malls and metro stations.

Common myths are worth clearing. You do not need to be certain that the heart has stopped before starting, since a person who is unresponsive and not breathing normally needs help at once. Pouring water on the face or waiting for family to arrive wastes the time that matters. Laying the person flat on a firm surface helps compressions work, so move them from a bed to the floor if you can.

What good compressions look like

For an adult, the person doing CPR places the heel of one hand on the centre of the chest, puts the other hand on top and pushes straight down about 5 to 6 cm, at a pace of 100 to 120 a minute. Between pushes the chest must come back up fully. The usual ratio with breaths is 30 compressions to 2 breaths.

A song with a beat in that range helps some people keep the pace, but counting aloud works just as well. Do not stop for long to check a pulse or to change position.

If you have not been trained, hands-only compressions are the recommended method. In children and in drowning, the trouble usually starts with breathing and not the heart, so breaths matter more there, and a proper course will show you how.

This page describes, it does not teach. Do a hands-on course with a mannequin before you ever need it.

Learning it properly

Hospitals, Red Cross branches and many first aid organisations run short CPR courses. Colleges, offices and housing societies sometimes invite trainers too, and a Sunday morning spent on one is time well used.

Healthcare staff have more to do than bystanders, such as managing the airway, giving drugs and using a monitor. Patients who survive are then looked after in an ICU.

Ask whether a course includes practice on adult and child mannequins and a trainer who watches your technique. Reading about depth and pace is not the same as feeling how hard you have to push. Many people stop pressing too early or push too gently out of fear of hurting the patient. A cracked rib is a known and acceptable risk when the alternative is death.

In an emergency in India

Dial 112, the national emergency number, or ask a bystander to do it while you start. Some states also run ambulance services on 108. Send someone to look for an AED in the building, a mall or a station.

Good Samaritan rules in India protect a person who helps an injured or sick stranger from being harassed, for example by police or hospital staff demanding forms or payment before treatment. You do not have to give your name or stay behind. Fear of legal trouble should not stop you from helping.

If you see someone collapse, call 112 first or get someone else to, and start pushing on the chest. The training takes a few hours, and it is one of the few skills that could save a stranger's life or a family member's.

CPR Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of CPR?

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is an emergency procedure of chest compressions, sometimes with rescue breaths, used when someone's heart or breathing has stopped.

What is the CPR full form in medical terms?

In medical terms it is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Cardio refers to the heart, pulmonary to the lungs, and resuscitation to reviving. The aim is to keep blood and oxygen reaching the brain until proper help arrives.

Does CPR restart the heart?

Usually not by itself. It keeps some blood flowing to the brain and heart and buys time. Restoring a normal rhythm often needs an electric shock from a defibrillator, so CPR and an AED work together.

What is the compression-to-breath ratio in CPR?

For adults the usual ratio is 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths. Untrained rescuers are advised to do compressions only. For children, breaths matter more, so a proper first aid course is worth taking.

When should someone do CPR?

When a person is unresponsive and not breathing, or only gasping occasionally. Call for emergency help straight away, in India through 112, and start compressions. Do not waste time hunting for a pulse if you are not trained.

Can CPR hurt the person?

Strong compressions can bruise the chest or break a rib. That is a known risk and far less serious than the heart staying stopped. If the person is not breathing and unresponsive, they will not be worse off for the attempt.

How do you pronounce CPR?

Say the three letters one by one, see-pee-ar. The long name is said as kar-dee-oh-PUL-muh-nair-ee ree-suh-sih-TAY-shun. Most people in hospitals and training courses simply say CPR.
