The money reaches the other account in seconds

IMPS stands for Immediate Payment Service. It is an instant electronic transfer between bank accounts in India, run by NPCI on top of the National Financial Switch network. You send the money, the other person's account is credited within moments, and it works even when the bank branch is closed.

If your bank app asks you to choose between UPI, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS, IMPS is the one made for urgent, direct transfers, such as paying a friend back or sending rent late in the evening.

The old name floating around is wrong

Many websites and quiz sheets write the full form as Immediate Mobile Payment Service. That is not the official name, and the word mobile is not part of it. The service is accessible through mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs, so it is easy to see how the extra word crept in.

If an exam or a form asks for the full form, write Immediate Payment Service.

Where it came from, and what UPI owes it

NPCI ran a pilot in 2010 with a handful of banks, and IMPS was publicly launched on 22 November 2010. More banks joined over the years, and the service became part of ordinary banking apps.

There is a bigger story here. UPI was built on top of IMPS, so every time you scan a QR code at a chai stall, you are using an idea that IMPS proved first.

IMPS, NEFT or RTGS: which one to pick

All three move money between banks, and they differ mainly in speed and size. NEFT became available around the clock from December 2019, and RTGS followed from 14 December 2020. That removed the old gap where IMPS was the only option at night.

A practical way to choose: use IMPS or UPI for quick everyday transfers, and look at RTGS for very large amounts. Transfer limits and charges differ from bank to bank and change over time, so read your own bank's current schedule or ask at the branch rather than trusting a number from a website.

What you need to send an IMPS payment

You can pay in a few ways. The common one is the recipient's account number and IFSC code, which you can find on a cheque leaf or in their bank app. Another is the recipient's mobile number linked to their account, plus an MMID, which is a short code the bank issues. See what IFSC means if you have never typed one before.

Confirm the name shown on screen before you press send. An instant transfer cannot simply be pulled back, so a wrong digit means a call to the bank and a wait.

A worked example: sending rent at 11 pm

It is the last day of the month, 11 pm, and your landlord in Hyderabad wants the rent before midnight. You open your bank app, choose IMPS, add him as a beneficiary with his account number and IFSC, check that the name shown matches, and enter the amount. You approve with your PIN or OTP, and the message of success appears within seconds.

Save the transaction reference number and a screenshot. If the landlord says he has not received it, the number is what the bank uses to trace the payment.

When an IMPS transfer fails or goes to the wrong person

If money is debited but not credited, wait for the bank's automatic reversal, which normally comes within a short time, and keep the transaction reference number safe. If it does not come, contact your bank's customer care and quote that reference number.

For a transfer to the wrong account, tell your bank immediately, in writing if possible. The bank can contact the receiving bank, but the money returns only with the recipient's consent or through a formal process. Unresolved complaints can go to the banking ombudsman, whose details are on the RBI website.

IMPS means Immediate Payment Service, not Immediate Mobile Payment Service. For limits, charges and what to do after a failed transfer, the final word comes from your own bank or the NPCI website.

IMPS Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of IMPS?

IMPS stands for Immediate Payment Service. It is an instant inter-bank electronic fund transfer system in India, managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Is IMPS the same as Immediate Mobile Payment Service?

No. Some older lists use that name, but the service is called Immediate Payment Service. Mobile banking is one way to use it, and that is probably where the confusion started.

When was IMPS launched?

IMPS was publicly launched on 22 November 2010, after an NPCI pilot earlier that year with a few banks.

What is the difference between IMPS and NEFT?

IMPS moves money instantly, while NEFT historically worked in batches. NEFT is now also available round the clock, but IMPS remains the usual choice when the money must reach the other person within seconds.

Does IMPS work on holidays and at night?

Yes. IMPS is designed to work around the clock, including bank holidays. Your own bank's app may still be down for maintenance at times, so check with your bank.

What is the difference between IMPS and UPI?

UPI is built on top of IMPS and lets you pay with a virtual payment address or QR code from one app linked to many accounts. IMPS needs the account number and IFSC, or mobile number and MMID.

What is the IMPS full form in banking in Hindi?

In Hindi it is usually written as इमीडिएट पेमेंट सर्विस, and the meaning given is तत्काल भुगतान सेवा. Bank branches and apps use the English acronym IMPS in every language.
