What a CA actually does all day

CA is Chartered Accountant. In India it is the qualification you need to audit company accounts, and CAs also file tax returns, advise on tax and help businesses keep their books in order.

Ask any small shop owner who files the GST return, and the answer is usually a CA or someone working under one. That is why families treat the title with so much respect.

Why it is called chartered

The word goes back to royal charters. Chartered accountants were the first accountants to form a professional body, set up in Scotland in 1854, and the early Scottish societies were granted a royal charter almost from the start.

In 1920 Mary Harris Smith became the first woman chartered accountant in the world, recognised by the institute in England and Wales. In India the profession is governed by the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, under which the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was set up. ICAI celebrates 1 July as CA Day.

The long road to the title

The route has three levels, foundation, intermediate and final, along with practical training called articleship under a practising CA. ICAI has revised this scheme more than once, so read the current rules on its website, not on a coaching centre's poster.

It is demanding, and it takes years. My honest tip: go for it because you like accounts, audit and tax, not because relatives say it is the safest career. Interest carries you through the attempts.

Checking that a CA is genuine

Because the title is protected by law, only a member of ICAI can use it. If you hire a CA for tax filing or audit, ask for the membership number and look it up on the ICAI website. A practising CA also holds a certificate of practice.

Since 2019 ICAI has asked members to put a Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) on certificates and audit reports they sign, and you can verify the number on the ICAI portal. If an auditor's certificate has no such number where one is required, ask why.

CA outside India

Chartered accountant is a title used in many countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa, each with its own institute and exams.

So a CA from India may be recognised by foreign bodies on certain terms, but the rules differ by country. Check with the foreign institute directly if you plan to work abroad.

The other CAs you will meet on forms and screens

In online security, CA means Certificate Authority, a body that issues digital certificates proving that a website or a person is who they claim to be. The padlock your browser shows when you open your bank's site depends on certificates of this kind.

In India, licensed Certifying Authorities issue digital signature certificates. A company director or a business owner may need one to file certain company and tax documents online, and their accountant often arranges it.

On a bank form, CA often means Current Account, the account a business uses, as opposed to SA, the Savings Account. Elsewhere, CA is simply the postal code for California or the abbreviation for Canada. If the form is about money, check which account type it asks for before you tick a box.
