The board whose name is printed on your marksheet

CBSE is the Central Board of Secondary Education, a national board of school education in India. It is under the Union Government and affiliates both government and private schools. If the top of your Class 10 or Class 12 certificate says CBSE, this is the body that set the paper, marked it and issued the result.

Lakhs of students sit its board exams every year, which is why results week fills the news and every neighbour knows who the local topper is. The board's head office is in Delhi, and it works through regional offices in different parts of the country.

A short history that explains the name

The first board of this kind in India was the United Provinces Board of High School and Intermediate Education, set up in 1921. Its area was too large to manage, and in 1929 the Government of India passed a resolution creating a joint board for Rajputana, Ajmer-Merwara, Central India and Gwalior, with its office at Ajmer. That was an early experiment in running secondary education across regions.

As states set up their own universities and boards, the joint board's area shrank. It was renamed the Central Board of Secondary Education in 1952, and it was reconstituted in 1962 so that it could serve schools across the country, including children of central government employees who are transferred from city to city. That purpose still explains why CBSE schools exist in so many places.

Which schools come under it

All Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are affiliated to CBSE. So are a large number of private schools, schools approved by the central government, and government schools in Delhi. A few schools abroad, mostly in the Gulf, are affiliated too, which is why you meet CBSE students in Dubai or Muscat.

To check whether a particular school is really affiliated, do not trust the board outside the gate. Ask for the affiliation number and look it up on the official CBSE website. This matters most when you are about to pay an admission fee.

Syllabus, board exams and languages

Affiliated schools follow the NCERT textbooks for most subjects in classes 9 to 12. That is the reason parents buy NCERT books even for children in other boards who are preparing for entrance tests.

CBSE conducts the Class 10 and Class 12 examinations, usually from February to March, and results have normally been declared in May. Students can choose among many languages, including Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati, so a child can study at least one subject in a language they feel at home with. Exact subject lists and schemes change, so read the latest circulars.

The board once ran the AIEEE for engineering admission. From 2013 that exam was replaced by JEE Main, and the National Testing Agency has conducted it since 2019. CBSE also ran the medical entrance AIPMT until NEET took over.

A worked example: what a Class 10 student does in a year

Take a student in a CBSE school in Pune. In the first half of the year she gets her school's internal assessments and unit tests. In the second half the school sends her registration details to the board, she receives an admit card through the school, and she writes the board papers in February and March. The marksheet and certificate come later, and results can be checked online with the roll number.

If she is unhappy with a mark, the board has a process for verification and re-evaluation of answer books, with a fee and a deadline. The dates are printed in the board's circulars each year, so do not wait for the school to remind you.

Marksheet, certificate and digital documents

After the result, the school hands out the original marksheet and passing certificate. Many students also get their documents in digital form through the government's digital document services, which employers and colleges accept in place of a photocopy. Keep the roll number and school code safe, because they are needed to download a duplicate or to ask for a correction.

Mistakes in a name or date of birth are best raised with the school while the student is still enrolled. Changing them years later needs affidavits and a longer process, and the rules are set out on the board's website.

CBSE or a state board: how families decide

Families who move cities for work often prefer CBSE because the syllabus stays the same across states. That is a real advantage if you are likely to be transferred. If your child will stay in one state and aim for a state-level exam, the state board can be just as sensible.

The other national school board is ICSE, run by a separate council. Whatever you choose, read the official circulars for registration dates, exam schedules and marking changes, because those get revised often.

For revision: CBSE is the Central Board of Secondary Education, set up in 1929, renamed in 1952 and reconstituted in 1962. It follows NCERT books and conducts the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams.
