What CPT was and who conducted it

The CPT full form is Common Proficiency Test. It was the entry-level examination of India's Chartered Accountancy course, conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Clearing it was the first gate before CA Intermediate, which was then called IPCC.

A student could register with ICAI after passing Class 10 and then sit for CPT after Class 12. The exam was held twice a year, in June and December. That timing placed it in many Indian family discussions about which stream to take after school.

The paper was cheap to enter and could be cleared without a big coaching fee, though coaching hubs in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai ran whole batches around the two dates. Old CPT material, such as pamphlets, crash-course videos and forum answers from before 2018, still circulates, which is one reason the term keeps being searched.

Four sections, 200 marks and negative marking

CPT carried 200 marks across four sections: Fundamentals of Accounting for 60 marks, Mercantile Laws for 40, General Economics for 50 and Quantitative Aptitude for 50. It was a pen-and-paper exam answered on an OMR sheet, in two sessions of two hours each on the same day.

Negative marking was one-fourth of a mark for each wrong answer. Across 200 questions that adds up, so candidates were taught to leave a doubtful question blank instead of guessing. A worked example: with 120 right and 40 wrong answers, the score was 120 minus 10, that is 110.

The pass requirement was 40 per cent in each section and 50 per cent in aggregate. A student who did badly in Quantitative Aptitude could not be rescued by a strong Accounting paper, so all four subjects had to be prepared.

Many students prepared by solving past papers under timed conditions. Quantitative Aptitude and Accounting were speed tests, so practising 50 questions in about 45 minutes was a common routine. Since the paper also had a section on law and one on economics, a strong reader could score well there without a maths background.

What replaced the Common Proficiency Test

Under ICAI's revised scheme of education, students registering from 1 July 2017 take CA Foundation instead of CPT. The first CA Foundation exam was held in May 2018, and CPT was closed to new entrants from then on.

Foundation covers similar ground: accounting, business laws, quantitative aptitude and business economics. It is divided into four papers, with the first two descriptive and the other two objective. CPT's single all-objective paper was quicker to evaluate, but easier to guess through, and ICAI wanted a stricter first filter.

Students who had cleared CPT continued under the old scheme, so those results stay on their ICAI records. For everyone else, a CPT reference in an old guide, a coaching advertisement or a relative's certificate means the pre-2018 entry test, the same first rung on the ladder under another name. Today, a student after Class 12 registers for CA Foundation and then moves to Intermediate, Articleship and Final. The two other professional accounting paths, CS and CMA, have their own foundation stage.

Other meanings of CPT

In shipping and trade documents, CPT is Carriage Paid To, an Incoterms rule in which the seller pays carriage to a named destination, while risk passes to the buyer once the goods are handed to the first carrier.

In United States medical billing, CPT is Current Procedural Terminology, the five-digit procedure codes maintained by the American Medical Association that insurers use to decide what to pay for a consultation, test or surgery.

In Indian education, a CA aspirant means Common Proficiency Test. A freight forwarder means Carriage Paid To. A hospital billing desk, especially one that handles foreign insurance, means Current Procedural Terminology. The surrounding document, whether an ICAI form, a bill of lading or a claim, tells you which one is meant.

If an old CA guide or advertisement mentions CPT, read it as the earlier name for the entry exam that CA Foundation replaced. The syllabus overlap is close enough that old books still help, but the pattern and registration rules are no longer the same.

Four sections: Fundamentals of Accounting (60 marks), Mercantile Laws (40), General Economics (50) and Quantitative Aptitude (50), totalling 200 marks. The cut-off was 40 per cent in each section and 50 per cent in aggregate, with one-fourth mark deducted for each wrong answer.
