RO Full Form

Reverse Osmosis / Returning Officer

What does RO stand for? A general term, explained.

RO Full Form in English, letter by letter

R Reverse
O Osmosis

RO means Reverse Osmosis, a membrane water purification method, or Returning Officer, the official who conducts an election in a constituency.

RO Full Form in Indian Languages

RO in an Indian kitchen means Reverse Osmosis, the membrane that removes dissolved salts from drinking water, and in election season it means Returning Officer, the official who runs a constituency's poll. The name in six Indian languages follows.

How reverse osmosis purifies water

Osmosis is the natural movement of water through a membrane from a dilute solution towards a concentrated one. Reverse osmosis applies pressure to push water the other way. Feed water is forced against a semi-permeable membrane with extremely fine pores, and mostly water molecules pass. Dissolved salts, many metals and nitrates stay behind and leave in a reject stream.

A domestic RO unit is a chain of stages: a sediment filter catches silt, an activated carbon filter removes chlorine and odour, the membrane removes dissolved salts, and a final stage, often UV or carbon, polishes the water. The pump that builds pressure is why RO purifiers need electricity.

What RO removes, and what it costs you

A working membrane rejects the large majority of dissolved salts, which is why households with high TDS groundwater buy RO. It also helps with hardness, fluoride, nitrate and arsenic, though results depend on the membrane and on the feed water.

The cost is waste water. Domestic units typically discharge two to three litres of reject water for every litre of purified water. RO also removes useful minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which is why many purifiers carry a TDS controller or a mineral cartridge to blend some back.

That is why RO is not advised when incoming TDS is already low. Below about 250 to 300 mg per litre, a UV or UF purifier cleans the water without waste. IS 10500, India's drinking water standard, gives 500 mg per litre as the acceptable limit of TDS and 2,000 as the permissible limit where no better source exists.

Choosing an RO purifier: the practical checklist

Match the machine to your water. For brackish groundwater a full sediment, carbon and RO chain is right. For municipal supply with moderate TDS, UV or UF may be enough. Domestic RO systems fall under BIS certification, so look for the ISI mark and a licence number against IS 16240.

Budget for running cost, not only the purchase price. Filters need regular changes and the membrane lasts a few years depending on feed quality. Ask about warranty on the membrane in particular, and about service coverage in your area.

Looking after an RO purifier at home

A purifier gives good water only when it is maintained. Change the sediment and carbon filters on the schedule the maker gives, and the membrane when the output falls or the TDS of the purified water rises. Use a TDS meter to check the water before and after the membrane. If the purified reading is more than about a tenth of the input, the membrane may be weak.

Clean the storage tank when you service the machine. Reject water can be used for mopping, cleaning or watering ornamental plants, but not for drinking or cooking. If your supply has low TDS, ask a service engineer to bypass the membrane or choose a UV or UF unit, and do not accept a plan that wastes more water than needed.

Returning Officer: who runs an Indian election

At election time, RO stands for Returning Officer. The Election Commission of India appoints one for every assembly or parliamentary constituency going to the polls, usually a senior state officer such as a District Magistrate or a Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Assistant Returning Officers help, and the District Election Officer coordinates at district level.

The RO's duties start with issuing the public notice, then receiving and scrutinising nominations, allotting symbols, arranging polling stations and staff, and applying the model code of conduct in the constituency. On counting day the RO conducts the count and declares the result.

What the Returning Officer checks in a nomination

A Lok Sabha candidate needs to deposit ₹25,000 (₹12,500 for SC and ST candidates) and an assembly candidate ₹10,000 (₹5,000 for SC and ST). A candidate of a recognised party needs one proposer who is a registered elector of the constituency. An independent or a candidate of an unrecognised party needs ten. The Form 26 affidavit declares criminal cases, assets, liabilities and education.

The RO examines each nomination at scrutiny and can reject it for defects under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Paperwork errors sink candidates more often than substance. A candidate who gets less than one-sixth of the valid votes polled loses the deposit.

Check the setting before using RO. A kitchen conversation is about Reverse Osmosis and your TDS reading, while a news report is about the Returning Officer and the nomination papers.

RO Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of RO?

RO stands for Reverse Osmosis in water purification and Returning Officer in elections. Which one applies depends on whether you are talking about a purifier or a poll.

What does RO mean in a water purifier?

It means Reverse Osmosis. Pressure forces water through a membrane with extremely fine pores, leaving most dissolved salts behind in a reject stream. It suits high-TDS groundwater.

When is RO unnecessary for drinking water?

When your water's TDS is already low. Below roughly 250 to 300 mg per litre, a UV or UF purifier is enough and wastes no water. Many municipal supplies do not need RO at all.

How much waste water does an RO purifier produce?

Typically two to three litres of reject water for every litre purified, more when the membrane is fouled or feed TDS is very high. Models with recirculation do better, but some waste is inherent to the process.

Who is a Returning Officer in India?

The Returning Officer conducts the election in a constituency, usually a District Magistrate or an SDM appointed through the Election Commission of India. The RO receives and scrutinises nominations, arranges polling and the count, and declares the result.

What does a Returning Officer do with nomination papers?

The RO checks proposers, the security deposit and the Form 26 affidavit, and can reject a nomination that fails the requirements of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
