What WFH covers, and what it does not

Work From Home means the employee does the same role from home, usually on fixed days each week. Hybrid is the common version in Indian offices, with two or three days on site and the rest at home. Fully remote roles are fewer and concentrated in technology, content and support functions.

WFH is not freelancing or gig work. The employment contract, salary structure, provident fund and gratuity continue unchanged, and only the location moves. That distinction matters for tax, statutory coverage and any dispute about working hours.

Related terms travel with it. WFO means work from office, WFA means work from anywhere, and permanent WFH is an arrangement where the employee never reports to an office, sometimes from a different city than the employer's.

How Indian companies handled it after 2020

The 2020 lockdown sent millions of white-collar employees home almost overnight, and IT services led the shift. TCS announced a plan under which only about a quarter of its staff would need to be in offices at any time by 2025, and most large firms moved to hybrid policies rather than full return.

Several firms later pushed harder on office attendance, and 2023 and 2024 brought stricter mandates from some employers. In practice pure remote roles still exist but are scarcer, and hybrid is the baseline for most metropolitan IT and BFSI jobs.

Remote work also changed geography. Employees in smaller cities could take metro salaries without relocating, and some companies opened small offices and remote hubs to keep staff who did not want to move.

What you need at home to work properly

The baseline kit is a stable broadband connection of 50 to 100 Mbps, an inverter or UPS for power cuts, a proper chair, a desk at elbow height and enough light for video calls. These items prevent most of what shows up later as back pain, dropped calls and lost work.

A separate corner for work does more for productivity than any app. It signals the boundary to family members, often the real constraint in a joint household, and keeps work materials out of the bedroom.

Backup matters more than speed. A mobile hotspot on a second SIM and a charged laptop cover most outages. Many employers also pay a monthly connectivity or electricity allowance, so check your HR policy before paying out of pocket.

Keeping a remote team working

Remote teams lose the corridor conversation, so the fix is written communication: decisions in writing, an end-of-day status note and one shared place for project updates. Teams that skip this drift into confusion about who is doing what.

Meetings need tighter discipline than in an office. Agree timings that work for everyone, keep cameras optional for long calls and default to a short written update when nothing has to be decided.

The personal risks are real too: long sedentary hours, blurred boundaries between work and home, and isolation. Fixed start and end times, a lunch break away from the desk and a daily walk keep remote workers healthy over years.

Contract, tax and legal points for WFH in India

Ask for the arrangement in writing. Whether your WFH days are fixed or discretionary, whether you can work from another state, and what happens if the policy changes are worth confirming before you sign a lease or move city.

Working from a different state can raise questions about professional tax, leave rules under the local Shops and Establishments Act, and expense reimbursement. Check how internet and electricity bills are treated, because some companies pay a fixed allowance and others treat reimbursed bills as a taxable perquisite. Your payroll team or a chartered accountant can confirm your own position.

Work From Home works best when the rules are written down and the home setup is treated as equipment, not a luxury. Fix your hours, invest in a decent chair and connection, and keep the arrangement documented with your employer.

WFH Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of WFH?

WFH stands for Work From Home, working from your residence instead of commuting to an office. In Indian offices it often refers to the days of a hybrid schedule spent at home.

Do I keep the same salary and benefits when working from home?

If it is the same role under the same contract, yes. A change of location does not alter salary, provident fund or gratuity, though some companies adjust travel and meal allowances you no longer use.

What internet speed is enough for work from home?

Around 50 to 100 Mbps handles video calls, file sharing and cloud tools for one person, and more if the household streams or games at the same time. An inverter or UPS matters as much as speed in areas with frequent cuts.

Is the electricity or internet bill reimbursable while on WFH?

It depends on your employer's policy. Many companies pay a monthly allowance during declared WFH, and reimbursements may count as a taxable perquisite, so confirm with HR.

What is the difference between WFH and WFA?

WFH means working from your home. WFA, work from anywhere, allows you to work from another city, a hometown or a co-working space, subject to your employer's approval.
