From Personal Home Page to a recursive name

PHP began in 1994, when Rasmus Lerdorf wrote a set of small tools in C to track visitors to his online résumé. He called them Personal Home Page Tools, and the first public release followed in 1995. What PHP does on a website

PHP runs on the server, not in your browser. A page can mix ordinary HTML with blocks of PHP code, the server executes those blocks, and the browser receives plain HTML. The visitor never sees the PHP source or the database password behind it.

Typical jobs are reading from and writing to a database, checking a login, building a page from a template, sending email, handling file uploads and processing payments. Because the page is built before it is sent, the same script can show different content to different users.

PHP is often paired with a SQL database, most commonly MySQL or MariaDB, and a web server such as Apache or Nginx. The combination of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP is known as the LAMP stack.

Version matters for hosting. PHP releases are supported for a limited number of years, with active support followed by security-only fixes, and then the version reaches end of life. A site running on an old release without fixes becomes a security risk, so it is sensible to ask the hosting provider which version you are on and to upgrade plugins and themes when you change the version. WordPress sites should be updated regularly.

Where PHP is used today

WordPress is written in PHP and runs a very large share of websites. Drupal, Joomla and Magento are also PHP, which means most blogs, news sites and small online shops run on it. MediaWiki, the software behind Wikipedia, is another well-known PHP application. A CMS like WordPress is why many people use PHP without ever writing it.

For custom applications, companies use frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony, which give a standard structure for routing, databases, forms and security.

Hosting is cheap and available everywhere: shared hosting plans, cPanel and most cloud servers support PHP with no licence fee. That is one reason small Indian businesses and freelancers start their sites here.

PHP compared with other languages

Python, JavaScript (Node.js), Java and C# are also used on the server. Python is more common in data work and JavaScript dominates the browser, but PHP still has one of the largest collections of ready-made themes, plugins and inexpensive hosting.

Beginners find PHP easy to start with, since a few lines in a file uploaded to a server will produce output without any build step. The same ease has a cost: older tutorials show habits such as unescaped output and raw SQL strings that lead to security holes, so modern guides stress prepared statements and input checks.

Keep the roles separate. HTML describes the structure of the page, CSS styles it, JavaScript runs in the browser, and PHP builds the page on the server.

PHP in job ads and exams

Entry-level web developer advertisements often ask for PHP with MySQL and a framework such as Laravel, or WordPress theme and plugin work. Knowing how to deploy a site, read server logs and secure a form will set you apart from candidates who know only syntax.

Computer awareness papers sometimes ask the full form. The accepted answer is Hypertext Preprocessor, and it helps to mention that the original name was Personal Home Page.
