DSC Full Form in Indian Languages
Company directors sign MCA forms with a DSC, and e-tender bidders cannot work without one. Here is Digital Signature Certificate, with its name in six Indian languages.
What a Digital Signature Certificate does
DSC stands for Digital Signature Certificate. It is an electronic credential issued by a licensed Certifying Authority that links your identity to a pair of cryptographic keys, so a document signed online can be checked for both who signed it and whether it was changed.
The Information Technology Act, 2000 gives a valid digital signature the same legal standing as a handwritten one for the purposes the Act covers. A certificate does two jobs at once: it identifies the signer and it locks the file. Change even one character afterwards and verification fails.
Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 certificates
Certificates come in classes. Class 1 only checks your name and email address and is not used for official filings. Class 2 was verified against records such as PAN and was the usual choice for tax and company filings for years. Class 3, the strongest, is issued after identity verification in person or by video and is what tender authorities and many regulators require.
The Controller of Certifying Authorities stopped issuing new Class 2 certificates from 1 January 2021, so nearly all new certificates are Class 3. An old Class 2 certificate works until its expiry date. After that you apply for a new Class 3, and no renewal of Class 2 is available.
Where Indian rules ask for one
Income-tax returns of companies and many firms need a DSC or an electronic verification code (EVC), while individual taxpayers can usually verify with Aadhaar OTP or a bank-based EVC. Company filings on the MCA portal, such as director appointments and annual returns, are signed with a DSC. The GST portal asks for a DSC for companies and LLPs and allows EVC for some other taxpayers, depending on the type of registration.
A Class 3 certificate is also needed on e-tendering platforms, including the Central Public Procurement Portal and GeM, on ICEGATE for customs filings and on DGFT for import-export documents. Some of these ask for a certificate issued in the name of the organisation, which is why companies keep tokens for their authorised signatories.
How it is issued and stored
You apply to a Certifying Authority licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under MeitY. Names often seen on Indian portals include eMudra, Sify, nCode, CDAC and Vsign. The process is online: fill in the form, upload PAN and address proof, complete a video verification and pay the fee. Prices vary by provider, validity and whether a USB token is included, so compare before you buy.
Validity is one, two or three years from issue. The private key sits inside the USB token behind a PIN, so the certificate travels with the token and not with your laptop. If you lose the token, you have not lost the certificate in the sense of identity theft, but you cannot sign anything until the Certifying Authority issues a replacement after verification.
Note the expiry date when the certificate arrives and set a reminder at least a month earlier, because a renewal needs fresh verification. Keep the PIN private and do not lend the token to anyone, including a consultant filing on your behalf for a long period. If the token is lost or the PIN is compromised, ask the Certifying Authority to revoke the certificate so it cannot be misused.
DSC and eSign are not the same thing
A DSC is a key you carry, protect and plug in. Aadhaar-based eSign is the lighter option: you authenticate with an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile and no key file stays on your machine. Both are legally recognised under the IT Act, and many portals accept one or the other.
Use eSign for quick individual tasks and a one-off declaration. Keep a Class 3 DSC for company work, tenders and bulk signing, where the portal will not accept anything else. Install the token driver on one trusted computer and test the signing before the last day of a filing deadline.
A Digital Signature Certificate turns a click into something Indian law treats as a signature. Check what the portal requires, match the class and validity to it, and keep the USB token somewhere safe, as you would a stamp.
DSC Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of DSC?
DSC stands for Digital Signature Certificate. It is an electronic credential issued by a licensed Certifying Authority that verifies your identity and shows that a signed document has not been changed.
How long is a Digital Signature Certificate valid?
A DSC is issued for one, two or three years from the date of issue, and portals reject signatures once it expires. Renewal means applying again with fresh identity verification, so plan a few weeks before a filing deadline.
Who issues DSCs in India?
Certifying Authorities licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Several licensed providers are listed on the CCA website.
Can I use Aadhaar eSign instead of a DSC?
Many government portals accept OTP-based eSign for individuals. MCA company filings, e-tenders, customs and DGFT documents generally still need a Class 3 DSC, so businesses keep one regardless.
What is the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 DSC?
Class 2 matched your identity against government databases and was widely used for tax and company filings, but new Class 2 certificates have not been issued since 1 January 2021. Class 3 needs in-person or video verification and is required for tenders and high-value work.
What documents do I need to apply for a DSC?
Usually a PAN, an Aadhaar or other address proof, a passport photograph, and a working email and mobile number. Organisation certificates also need company documents and an authorisation letter.
