TC Full Form in Indian Languages
A school asks for your TC at the time of admission, and the deadline is tomorrow. This page explains what a Transfer Certificate contains and how to get one.
What a Transfer Certificate Actually Says
The TC full form is Transfer Certificate. It is the document a school or college issues when a student leaves, confirming that the student studied there, for how long and in which class. Some boards and states call it a school leaving certificate (SLC).
A typical TC carries the student's name, date of birth, admission number, class, subjects studied, dates of joining and leaving, the board registration number for Class 10 or 12, any concession or scholarship availed, fee status and a remark on conduct. That last line matters. An adverse entry follows the student into the next institution.
Where You Will Need One
The commonest case is changing schools. Colleges ask for the TC at admission, and a university transfer usually needs a migration certificate as well, so students moving after Class 12 or mid-degree often need the papers within days of the admission deadline. Colleges ask for the TC at reporting even when seats are allotted through a central test such as CUET.
Mid-session exits are the messy kind. If a family relocates or a student changes stream, the school issues the TC on request along with the report card, and the next school admits the student on that record. Fee receipts and the last marksheet kept handy shorten the process.
What the Law Says About Refusing a TC
Schools sometimes hold documents back over unpaid fees. For elementary education there is a legal answer. Section 5 of the RTE Act, 2009 gives a child the right to move to another school, and says the head teacher of the school last attended must issue the transfer certificate without delay. Delay in producing it cannot be a ground for delaying or denying admission in the new school.
The RTE Act covers classes 1 to 8. For classes above that, the rules of the state education department and the board apply, and courts have also held that a transfer certificate cannot be used as a weapon to recover fees. The fees remain payable and can be recovered in the usual way. If a school still refuses, a written complaint to the district education officer (or to the CBSE or state board regional office, for affiliated schools) is the normal next step.
TC, Migration and Provisional Certificates Are Different Papers
Migration certificate
Issued by the university or board when you move to a different university or board. The TC comes from the institution you are leaving. For a school-to-school move within a state, the TC is normally all you need.
Provisional certificate
A stand-in for the degree or marksheet while the original is being prepared. It has nothing to do with leaving an institution, and it stops being needed once the original is issued.
Character and course completion certificates
A character certificate speaks to conduct over a period and is often asked for by employers. A course completion certificate confirms a student finished a programme before formally graduating. Job applications usually want these, not the TC.
Small Mistakes on a TC That Cost Weeks
Wrong name spellings, dates of birth and subject codes on a TC have derailed admissions. Schools correct these on a written application with supporting records, such as the birth certificate or last marksheet, and reissue the document. Ask for the original and a few attested copies on the spot, since boards, colleges and passport offices may each want one.
Most Indian schools issue the TC free or for a small fee. Collecting it before the last working day, rather than a month after results, saves a round of follow-up calls.
How to Request a TC Step by Step
Write a short application to the principal giving the student's name, class, admission number and the reason for leaving. Attach a copy of the new school's admission letter if you have it, and clear any pending dues in writing so no excuse is left.
Ask for an acknowledgement slip with the date, since that date starts the clock if the school delays. Check every detail on the certificate before you leave the office, and get it signed and stamped. A TC without the principal's signature and the school seal is not accepted by most institutions.
The Transfer Certificate is your record of leaving a school, and the next one will ask for it. Request it in writing, check the spelling of every name and date before you leave, and keep the original with your other important papers.
TC Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of TC?
TC stands for Transfer Certificate, the document an Indian school or college issues when a student leaves. It records the period of study, class, subjects, fee status and conduct.
How many days does a school take to issue a TC?
The RTE Act, 2009 says the TC must be issued without delay when a child seeks to move to another school, and it sets no longer period. State rules and boards often fix a time limit, so apply in writing and keep the acknowledgement slip.
Can a school refuse to give my TC for non-payment of fees?
A school can demand the fees but, under the RTE Act for classes 1 to 8 and as courts have held more broadly, it cannot withhold the certificate to force payment. A complaint to the district education officer or the board's regional office usually resolves such refusals.
What is the difference between a TC and a migration certificate?
A TC comes from the school or college you left and is used for admission in another institution. A migration certificate is issued by the university or board when you move to a different university or board.
Is a TC required for admission to Class 11?
Most schools ask for the Class 10 TC and marksheet when a student changes schools for Class 11. For a transfer within the same school, the school keeps its own record.
What can I do if there is a mistake on my TC?
Apply in writing to the school with proof such as a birth certificate or marksheet, and ask for a corrected certificate. Get the correction done before using the TC for admission, as a mismatch with other records can hold up the admission.
