What NIRF is and how it began

The NIRF full form is National Institutional Ranking Framework. The Ministry of Education (then the Ministry of Human Resource Development) launched it in 2015, and the first all-India lists appeared in 2016, replacing the informal rankings colleges had been quoting in brochures for years.

Participation is voluntary. Colleges, universities and professional institutions apply each year and submit data on faculty, placements, research output, campus facilities and graduation results for the previous years.

Scores are calculated out of 100 marks across five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (30), Research and Professional Practice (30), Graduation Outcomes (20), Outreach and Inclusivity (10) and Perception (10). Each has sub-parameters set out in a published methodology document.

Unlike magazine polls, NIRF runs on a published methodology, and each institution's parameter-wise score is released next to its final rank. You can see where the marks came from rather than taking a name on trust. Two colleges that sit three places apart can be compared line by line on placement rate, faculty strength and research output.

NIRF ranks are published category by category

One list would be useless, so NIRF publishes separate rankings for Overall, Universities, Colleges, Engineering, Management, Medical, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, Agriculture and Dental, with newer lists for research institutions, innovation and open universities. A law school can rank 40th overall and still be 5th among law schools.

An affiliated college is judged in the Colleges category against other colleges. It does not inherit the rank of its university. Deemed universities and central universities, by contrast, can appear in the Overall and University lists alongside the IITs and IISc.

Ranks move year to year with data rather than reputation, so a college that hired faculty or improved its placement record can climb several places in a cycle, and slide just as fast.

IIT Madras has held first place in the Overall list every year since 2019, and IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi usually follow in the top few places. That is why those names dominate admission talk every June.

What actually moves a college's NIRF score

Teaching covers student-faculty ratio, faculty qualifications and spending per student. Graduation outcomes cover placement rate, median salary and students going on to further study, which is the figure most applicants look at first.

Research is measured through publications and citations drawn from international databases, patents and funded projects. This is where teaching-focused colleges lose ground to the IITs and IISc, whose citation counts are far higher.

Outreach and inclusivity rewards regional and gender diversity, facilities for students with disabilities and reach into under-served districts, which helps explain why a strong regional college can outperform a better-known city institution.

Perception carries only 10 marks, but colleges work hard at it, since it comes from surveys of academics, employers and the public and tends to lag behind genuine improvement by a year or two.

How to read a NIRF rank honestly

Ranks are tightly packed. Institutions separated by a fraction of a point can sit ten places apart, so the score gap matters more than the position printed on a poster. Two colleges one place apart are effectively tied.

The data is submitted by the institutions and checked afterwards, and only institutions that apply get ranked. A college you are considering may simply not be on any list.

NIRF also has no role in seat allocation. JEE, NEET and state counselling use your exam rank, never a college's NIRF position, so treat the list as background reading while you shortlist. The lists are published once a year, and the release month has varied from year to year, so always check the year printed beside a rank.

Before paying a fee, open the parameter scores, check the placement and faculty numbers the college publishes itself, and visit the campus. The rank tells you where to start looking, nothing more.

NIRF, NAAC and other ratings are not the same thing

NIRF ranks institutions against each other on a yearly cycle. NAAC accreditation grades a single institution against a quality standard and is valid for several years. Programme-level approvals from bodies such as the NBA or AICTE are separate again.

A college can hold a high NAAC grade and an average NIRF rank, or the other way round, because the two measure different things. When a brochure quotes both, look at the year, the category and the programme the figure refers to.

NIRF, the National Institutional Ranking Framework, works best as a shortlisting tool. Open the score sheet, compare the parameters that matter to you, and then look at the campus yourself.
