The one exam between Class 12 and a medical seat

NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. The undergraduate version, NEET (UG), is the single national entrance exam for MBBS and other undergraduate medical courses in India, conducted by the National Testing Agency. It is among the exams with the most applicants in the country.

Before it existed, states held their own entrance tests, and colleges like AIIMS and JIPMER ran separate exams. A student aiming at several colleges could end up preparing for a different paper for each. NEET was meant to replace that pile with one exam and one merit list.

A rocky road: AIPMT, court cases and the comeback

Until 2012 the CBSE ran the All India Pre-Medical Test, or AIPMT. NEET-UG was introduced in 2013, and the first exam was held on 5 May 2013. Later that year, on 18 July, the Supreme Court cancelled it. For 2014 and 2015, AIPMT was held again.

NEET was restored in 2016 after a Constitution bench recalled the earlier verdict. From 2019 the NTA took over the conduct of the exam. After the National Medical Commission Act 2019, NEET-UG became the sole entrance test for medical colleges, including AIIMS and JIPMER.

What the paper looks like on exam day

NEET (UG) tests Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with Biology divided into Botany and Zoology. A correct answer gives 4 marks, a wrong one takes away 1, and the maximum score is 720. The syllabus is built from the NCERT books of classes 11 and 12. The number of questions and sections has been adjusted in some years, so read the current bulletin for the exact paper pattern.

That minus one matters. A blind guess costs you, so a sensible approach is to attempt what you know well first and keep doubtful questions for the end. The NCERT books are the base for Biology especially.

A worked example of the marking

Say a student gets 150 questions right, 20 wrong, and leaves 10 unattempted. The score is 150 x 4 = 600, minus 20 x 1 = 20, which gives 580. Unattempted questions neither add nor subtract marks.

Notice how 20 wrong answers cost 20 marks plus the 80 marks those questions could have earned if answered correctly. That is why careful elimination of options matters more than speed on questions you are unsure about.

Language and the state objection

NEET was first held in English and Hindi. Later the exam was offered in more languages, and it can now be written in English, Hindi and a set of regional languages including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The choice available can depend on the exam centre, and the language chosen at application is final.

Several states, including Tamil Nadu, have objected to NEET over the years, arguing that the syllabus differs from their state board syllabuses and that it disadvantages rural students. The debate comes up in the news every admission season.

Dates, fees and counselling: read the official bulletin

Application dates, exam fees, the number of attempts allowed and the counselling process change over time. Do not rely on a coaching flyer or a forwarded message. The official NTA information bulletin and the counselling authority's website are the only sources worth trusting.

See the MBBS full form page for the degree this exam leads to. Students who prefer engineering have a parallel exam, covered at JEE.

Counselling is a separate process from the exam. After the result, the authorities hold rounds in which candidates fill in their choices of college and course, and seats are allotted by rank. Keep your original documents ready, and note the dates of each round, because missing a reporting date can cost you the seat. Quotas for central and state seats, and for reserved categories, are explained in the counselling brochure.

NEET (UG) is the exam for medical admission. Download the NTA bulletin for your year and keep a copy handy, because dates, fees and the pattern are all printed there.
