A Class 10 certificate from a board that is not run by the government

ICSE stands for Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. It is the certificate you get after the Class 10 board exam conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, or CISCE. The council is a private, non-governmental board, which surprises people who assume every board exam is a state or central government affair.

The same council runs the Class 12 exam, called ISC. So an ICSE school is usually also an ISC school, and students often stay with the same board for the full run.

English first, and why that matters on the marksheet

ICSE is taught in English, and English is one subject you cannot skip. The syllabus is divided into groups of subjects, and the board specifies how many subjects a candidate must offer and which of them count towards the result. Check the current regulations booklet for the exact scheme, because it has been revised over the years.

Students also complete internal assessment and project work in many subjects, and activities such as Socially Useful Productive Work, known as SUPW. These are school-level tasks you cannot cram for the night before, so start them early in the year.

What the syllabus feels like in practice

ICSE has a reputation for a wide syllabus and a strong focus on language and writing. Students write full-length answers in English, often with detailed explanations, and literature is studied alongside language. Science is taught as separate subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and the maths and social science papers expect you to show your working and your reasoning.

A student moving from a state board or from CBSE usually needs a few months to get used to the writing load. Ask the school for a sample paper before admission so you see the style first.

ICSE or CBSE: how families usually decide

Neither board is better for every child. CBSE is a national board whose schools can teach in English or Hindi, and it has a very large number of schools across the country. If you move cities often, CBSE schools are easier to find.

If you are aiming for NEET or JEE later, students from both boards crack them every year. What matters more is the school, the teachers and how much the child enjoys studying. Check the entrance exam syllabus before you decide, not after.

Rules worth checking before Class 10 starts

The CISCE sets its own rules on who may appear, minimum marks in each subject, and how a student who does not pass can improve. The board's FAQ states the pass mark per subject as 35 percent, and a pass certificate needs the required number of subjects including English. Do not rely on a coaching centre's summary.

Most candidates are entered by the school they attend. Whether other routes exist, such as for repeat candidates, is decided by the board's current rules. Rules and dates are revised from time to time, so confirm on the official CISCE website or with your school before acting on any of this.

A practical example: choosing a school for a Class 6 child

A family in Kolkata is choosing a school for a child who is starting Class 6. They like the idea of strong English and a broad syllabus, so they shortlist two ICSE schools. They ask each school for last year's board results, a sample question paper, the teacher-student ratio and the fee for the full year, including books and activities.

They also ask how the school prepares children for Class 10 and what happens after: whether it runs ISC, and which streams it offers. Answers to these questions tell you more about a school than the signboard or the brochure does.

After ICSE: what comes next

Most students go on to Class 11 and 12, either through ISC in the same school or through another board in a college or junior college. Admission usually depends on your marks, and some schools or colleges run their own tests or ask for specific subject combinations.

If you are thinking about engineering or medicine, check the eligibility rules of the entrance exam, which usually name the subjects you must study in Class 11 and 12. Students who prefer a diploma or ITI route can apply after Class 10 as well.

ICSE is the Class 10 certificate from CISCE, and it sits beside ISC for Class 12. If you are choosing a board, visit a couple of schools, ask to see a sample question paper, and then decide.
