IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. These are autonomous public institutions for engineering, technology and research. They run under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which declares them Institutes of National Importance.
Every IIT is autonomous, but they are linked by a common IIT Council, and the Minister of Education is its ex officio chairperson. So the IIT in Kanpur and the one in Madras work independently, yet follow one national framework.
How a detention camp became an engineering campus
In 1946 a committee headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar recommended setting up higher technical institutes in different parts of India, along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first one began in May 1950 at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur, West Bengal.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad inaugurated it on 18 August 1951. At its convocation in 1956, Jawaharlal Nehru spoke of the old camp site standing now as a monument of India's urges and India's future in the making.
The first five, and why they are scattered
After Kharagpur, campuses followed at Bombay in 1958, Madras and Kanpur in 1959, and Delhi in 1961. The locations were spread across the country to avoid regional imbalance.
Later additions include Guwahati in 1994, set up under the Assam Accord, and Roorkee in 2001, when the University of Roorkee was converted into an IIT. IIT (BHU) Varanasi joined in 2012. There are 23 IITs at the time of writing, but new ones get added from time to time, so confirm the current list on the official IIT Council website.
Getting in is a different story
For undergraduate engineering, the road goes through the JEE and then a counselling process called JoSAA. For postgraduate courses the GATE score has long been used.
Do not trust a coaching brochure on cut-offs or fees. Ranks, seats and eligibility change, and only the official admission notice is final.
Reading a rank list: branch versus campus
At counselling you fill choices of branch and campus in order of preference. A rank that gets Computer Science at a newer IIT may get Mechanical or Civil at an older one. Neither is better in every case, because it depends on what you want to do afterwards.
A branch you enjoy at a strong campus often beats a branch you dislike at a famous one. Visit the campus websites, read the placement reports they publish, and talk to a senior before you lock your choices.
IIT, NIT and IIIT: the look-alikes
People often mix up IITs with NITs and IIITs. They are separate groups of institutes with different laws, entrance routes and funding patterns. See the NIT page for National Institutes of Technology.
Also remember that an IIT is a good institute but not a guarantee of a job. The student still has to do the work.
What student life there is like
Most IITs are residential campuses with hostels, labs and a heavy academic workload. First-year students generally study a common set of subjects before moving fully into their branch. Clubs, technical societies and cultural festivals are an important part of campus life.
Students from different states and languages live together, which is a big change for many first-year students from small towns. The institutes have counselling cells and student support, and stress is real, so ask about these when you visit.
