What NABL does

NABL began as a programme under the Department of Science and Technology and was registered as an autonomous society in 1998. It is now a constituent board of the Quality Council of India. It accredits testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, medical laboratories, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers.

Accreditation is not the same as approval or a licence. It means an assessment team has checked, against international standards, that the lab has competent staff, traceable equipment calibration and a documented quality system. The main standards are ISO/IEC 17025 for testing and calibration labs and ISO 15189 for medical labs, and the ISO series also covers proficiency testing and reference materials.

The point is confidence in a number. When a lab says a water sample is safe, a steel batch meets specification or a blood test shows a particular value, accreditation is the evidence that the number was produced under control.

Why a NABL report is accepted abroad

NABL is a signatory to the international arrangements for mutual recognition of accredited labs, those of ILAC and APAC. In practice, test reports from accredited labs are more readily accepted by regulators and buyers in member countries, though an importer can still ask for more.

That matters for exporters. A pharmaceutical quality control lab, a textile testing lab or an agri-export laboratory needs its certificate of analysis to be accepted in the destination market, and accreditation is the usual route.

Domestic buyers lean the same way. Government procurement, food testing and environmental monitoring work often ask for an accredited lab, and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and other regulators recognise labs on their own lists as well.

How a lab gets accredited

The lab applies on NABL's portal, submits its quality manual and technical records, and goes through a document review before an on-site assessment by assessors with matching technical expertise.

Requirements include calibration traceable to national standards, participation in proficiency testing or inter-laboratory comparisons, internal audits, control of records and training records for every analyst. Assessors also verify statements of measurement uncertainty and calibration records down to the instrument serial number, the detail that makes a result defensible in a dispute.

Accreditation is granted for a fixed term, with surveillance assessments in between and a full reassessment for renewal. Labs treat it as a continuing activity, not a one-time exercise.

NABL, NABCB, NABH and the rest of the family

All are Quality Council of India boards, and each covers a different target. NABL covers testing and calibration labs, NABCB covers certification and inspection bodies, NABH covers hospitals and healthcare providers, NABET covers education and training, and NBQP works on quality promotion.

A food company's path is typical: its testing lab holds NABL accreditation, its management system certificate comes from a NABCB-accredited certification body, and the hospital that treats its staff may hold NABH. Knowing which logo means what saves real confusion during audits.

What your report does and does not prove

For a patient, NABL accreditation of a pathology lab means the machines are calibrated, the analysts are trained and results pass internal quality checks. It is a reasonable floor of reliability, though it does not replace a doctor's judgment, and the lab can still make errors in sample collection.

The scope matters. An accreditation certificate lists the exact tests, methods and ranges covered, and a lab can be accredited for some tests and not for others. A report that carries the NABL symbol should be for a test that is within the lab's scope. If the symbol is missing from the report, the result was not issued under accreditation, even if the lab holds a certificate for other tests.

Accredited labs may charge a little more, because you are paying for the quality system behind the report.

How to check a lab

NABL maintains an online directory of accredited laboratories. Search by lab name or city, open the certificate and read the validity dates and the scope. Do this before sending samples for a legal, export or insurance purpose, where the report may be challenged later.

Exporters in particular should confirm that their lab's scope includes the exact parameter and method the buyer has named, since a general certificate may not be enough.

NABL is the reason a test result can travel from a lab in an Indian city to a regulator or buyer elsewhere without being run again. For anything that depends on a measured number, check the lab's accreditation and its scope first.
