CNG Full Form
Compressed Natural Gas
What does CNG stand for? A science term, explained.
CNG Full Form in English, letter by letter
CNG is natural gas, mostly methane, compressed into cylinders and used as a cleaner fuel for cars, autos and buses.
CNG Full Form in Indian Languages
CNG is printed on pumps and car stickers in English letters everywhere. The cards give the transliteration and a descriptive term where one is in common use.
What is actually inside that CNG cylinder
CNG is Compressed Natural Gas. It is natural gas, mostly methane, squeezed to less than 1 percent of its volume at normal atmospheric pressure so that a useful amount fits in a cylinder.
It is stored at very high pressure, around 20 to 25 megapascals (roughly 200 to 250 times atmospheric pressure). That is why the cylinder in a car boot is thick and heavy.
Why auto-rickshaws and city buses went CNG
CNG runs in modified petrol engines, dual-fuel vehicles and purpose-built CNG vehicles. In India it is common in auto-rickshaws, taxis, city buses and pickups. Compared with petrol and diesel it releases less of several pollutants, and the running cost per kilometre is usually lower.
Delhi is the best-known case: after Supreme Court directions in the late 1990s, its buses and autos were moved to CNG to cut urban air pollution. The trade-off is storage. The cylinder eats boot space and costs money to fit.
CNG, PNG, LPG and LNG: four gases, four jobs
CNG is for vehicles. PNG is natural gas piped into your kitchen. LPG is the cylinder from your gas agency, a different gas altogether (propane and butane). LNG is natural gas chilled into a liquid for shipping and industry.
By volume, CNG holds only about a quarter of the energy of diesel, which is why a CNG tank gives less range than a diesel tank of the same size.
Before you fit a CNG kit in your petrol car
Natural gas is lighter than air, so a leak disperses upwards instead of pooling on the ground. That helps, but it does not remove the need for care.
Use an authorised fitter, check the cylinder's certification and testing dates, and keep the service record. Tell your insurer and get the change of fuel recorded in your RC, as the law requires. Rules and costs vary by state, so confirm with the local transport office.
Filling up, mileage and small habits that matter
CNG is sold by weight, in kilograms, not by the litre. Stations are fewer than petrol pumps in most cities, and busy ones can have long queues, so note a couple of stations on your route before a long trip.
Mileage claims differ from car to car, so measure your own. Note the kilograms you fill and the distance covered between two fill-ups, then divide. Do this for a month and you will know your real running cost.
Fill only at licensed stations, and if you smell gas in the car, stop, switch off and have it checked by the fitter.
Keep the cylinder test certificate and the fitment papers in the glovebox. Traffic police, insurers and buyers of your used car may all ask to see them, and a missing certificate can cost you at resale.
Reading a CNG station queue and your bill
At a CNG station the attendant connects a nozzle to your car's filling valve and the dispenser shows kilograms filled and the amount to pay. Compare the amount with the posted rate per kilogram, and keep the receipt, especially if you run a taxi or an auto and track costs.
Rates are revised by the city gas companies, so a rate you heard last month may not hold. Check the board at the station. If the pressure shown at the end looks lower than usual, ask the attendant to refill, because a partly filled cylinder cuts your range.
If you are considering a CNG kit for your petrol car, get quotes only from authorised fitters and ask about cylinder testing dates. A cheap fitting is the one place not to save money.
CNG Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of CNG?
CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. It is natural gas, mostly methane, squeezed into high-pressure cylinders so that it can be used as a vehicle fuel in place of petrol or diesel.
What is the CNG full form in Hindi?
In Hindi it is कंप्रेस्ड नेचुरल गैस, and the descriptive form is संपीडित प्राकृतिक गैस. At the pump, everyone just says सीएनजी.
What is the difference between CNG and LPG?
CNG is natural gas, mainly methane, stored at high pressure. LPG is a different gas, liquefied under much lower pressure, and it is what fills your kitchen cylinder. They are not interchangeable in a vehicle.
What is the difference between CNG and PNG?
Both are natural gas. CNG is compressed and stored in cylinders for vehicles, while PNG, Piped Natural Gas, reaches homes through pipelines for cooking. Some city gas companies supply both.
Is CNG safer than petrol?
Natural gas is lighter than air, so it disperses upwards if it leaks, which helps. But the cylinder holds high pressure, so use an approved kit, a registered fitter and get periodic cylinder testing done.
What is the difference between CNG and LNG?
CNG is gas squeezed under pressure. LNG is natural gas cooled until it becomes a liquid, which takes up far less space and is mainly used for shipping and industry.
Do I need to update my RC after fitting a CNG kit?
Yes. A change of fuel type has to be endorsed on the registration certificate through the transport office, and your insurer should be told. Driving with an unrecorded retrofit can cause trouble at inspection or while claiming insurance.
