What NABH is

NABH is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India (QCI), which was set up in 1997 as an autonomous body with government support. The board began work in 2005, though some sources give 2006.

Its job is accreditation: a voluntary, independent check that a hospital follows written protocols for patient care, safety and infection control. It is not a licence to operate. A hospital still needs its registration and approvals under state and central law. But insurers and government schemes increasingly treat accreditation as a baseline expectation.

NABH's hospital standards are published and revised from time to time, and they have been benchmarked against international accreditation norms through the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).

How a hospital gets accredited

It starts with leadership commitment. The hospital forms a quality team, writes its own procedures and runs internal audits for several months before approaching NABH. Skipping this step is why many first applications struggle.

Then come the application, a review of documents and an on-site assessment by a team of assessors, usually a doctor, a nurse and an administrator, who trace records, watch processes and interview staff across departments.

After technical review, an accreditation committee decides. Smaller hospitals often begin with the entry-level programme before attempting full accreditation, which demands more documentation and covers more departments.

What the assessors actually check

The standard covers patient-centred care, access and admission, anaesthesia and surgery, medication management, infection prevention, medical records, staff qualifications, facility safety and a working quality improvement system with incident reporting.

The entry-level standard trims the paperwork and concentrates on essentials such as triage, infection control, medical records and emergency readiness, so that a small hospital can realistically reach it first.

In practice an assessor will follow one patient's journey through the file, from admission notes to discharge advice, and check that trained staff, calibrated equipment and stored drugs match what the record claims. A missing consent form or an unlabelled drug tray counts.

What the NABH logo means for a patient

An accredited hospital is expected to have written protocols, trained staff, sterilisation checks, drug storage discipline and a system for reporting errors. That does not guarantee a good outcome, but it raises the floor.

There is a practical benefit with insurance. Many insurers and TPAs prefer accredited hospitals for cashless empanelment, and government health schemes such as CGHS pay somewhat different package rates to accredited and non-accredited hospitals. Check the scheme's own rules for the current position.

Accreditation is granted for a defined period and reviewed through surveillance assessments, so a certificate on the wall means something only while it is valid. NABH publishes the list of accredited organisations, which settles any doubt about a lapsed certificate.

NABH, NABL, NABCB and JCI: do not mix them up

NABH accredits hospitals and healthcare providers. NABL is a different QCI board that accredits testing and calibration laboratories, including pathology labs inside hospitals. NABCB accredits certification and inspection bodies, and NABET deals with education and training providers. JCI is Joint Commission International, a US-based body that accredits hospitals abroad and in India.

A hospital may hold NABH and JCI together, while its laboratory holds NABL. Look at the name on each certificate and at its validity dates.

How to verify a hospital's NABH status

Ask to see the certificate. It shows the name of the organisation, the scope of accreditation, the standard and the validity period. Then search the hospital's name in the list of accredited organisations on NABH's own website. Watch for small differences: a hospital group may be accredited at one branch but not at another, and a certificate for a diagnostic centre does not cover the in-patient wing, the ICU or the operation theatres.

Also note whether the hospital holds full accreditation or the entry-level certificate. Both are real, but they are not equal. If a hospital uses the logo in advertising, the certificate should be easy to find on the same premises. If it is not, ask the front desk or the quality department, and if you still cannot confirm it, treat the claim as unproven until the published list says otherwise.

NABH is the closest thing Indian patients have to an independent quality signal before they walk into a hospital. Check the certificate, check its expiry date, and ask what it actually covers.
