The full form most people get slightly wrong

ISO is the short name of the International Organization for Standardization, an independent, non-governmental body made up of national standards organisations from member countries. Many websites write it as International Standardization Organization, but that is not the real name.

Strictly, ISO is not an acronym of the English name at all. The full name would give different initials in English (IOS) and French (OIN), so the founders chose one short form that works in every language. It comes from the Greek word isos, meaning equal.

What ISO actually does

ISO does not inspect factories or hand out certificates to shops. It writes international standards, which are agreed ways of doing or measuring things, so that products and services behave the same way in different countries. Its catalogue runs to tens of thousands of standards covering technology, food safety, transport, healthcare, management practice and more.

Electrical and electronic topics are mostly handled by a sister body, the International Electrotechnical Commission. ISO itself was founded on 23 February 1947 and its central secretariat is in Geneva, Switzerland (in the suburb of Vernier). Its official languages are English, French and Russian.

So who gives a company its ISO certificate

This is where the confusion starts. When a restaurant, school or factory puts up a board saying ISO 9001 certified, the certificate comes from an independent certification body that audited the organisation against that standard. ISO the organisation does not certify anyone.

A genuine certificate names the standard, the scope of the work covered, the issuing body, and a validity date. Most are valid for three years with yearly surveillance audits in between. In India, certification bodies are normally accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies, so ask for the accreditation mark on the certificate. A quick check you can do in a minute: note the certificate number and the name of the certification body, then look up that body's own website or contact it to confirm the certificate is real and still valid. Small shops sometimes display a certificate that has expired, or one issued by a body with no accreditation. Neither gives you the assurance the logo suggests. For a hospital, laboratory or food business, the relevant standard and the scope matter far more than the word ISO.

How a 1926 federation became ISO

The story starts in 1926 with the International Federation of the National Standardizing Associations, which focused mainly on mechanical engineering. It stopped working during the Second World War, in 1942.

After the war, the newly formed United Nations Standards Coordinating Committee suggested a new global body. Delegates from 25 countries met in London in October 1946 and agreed to create ISO, which began work in 1947. India has been a member through its national body, the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Standards are written by technical committees of experts nominated by member bodies, and a draft goes through several rounds of comment and voting before it is published. That is why standards are reviewed at intervals and sometimes replaced by a new edition. For example, ISO 9001 has had several editions, and a certificate must name the edition it was audited against.

Numbers you will see after the letters

Every standard has its own number. ISO 9001 is the one most Indian shopkeepers and schools advertise, and it covers quality management. ISO 14001 is about environmental management, ISO 45001 about occupational health and safety, and ISO 27001 about information security. Hospital labs often mention ISO 15189 and testing laboratories ISO/IEC 17025.

The number matters more than the logo. A board that only says ISO certified, with no number, tells you nothing about what was checked. Also remember that ISO 9001 certifies a management system, not the quality of every product the firm sells. A certified business can still sell a poor item, though it should have a documented way of dealing with complaints.

The ISO on your camera

Photography fans know ISO as a camera setting. A low number like 100 suits bright daylight, while 1600 or higher helps in a dim room but adds grain to the picture. The numbers follow the same ISO scale that once rated film speed, so ISO 400 film and an ISO 400 sensor setting are meant to behave alike.

So the same three letters can mean a standards body, a quality certificate or a camera sensitivity. The context tells you which one you are reading about.

Before trusting an ISO logo on a shop board, ask which standard it refers to and which body issued the certificate. A real certificate names both.
