MTP Full Form
Medical Termination of Pregnancy
What does MTP stand for? A medical term, explained.
MTP Full Form in English, letter by letter
MTP is Medical Termination of Pregnancy, the legal and medical process of ending a pregnancy in India under the MTP Act, 1971, as amended in 2021.
MTP Full Form in Indian Languages
MTP in Indian hospitals and law means Medical Termination of Pregnancy, regulated by an Act passed in 1971. Here is the name in six Indian languages.
The law behind MTP in India
The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act was passed in 1971, which made India one of the earlier countries to allow abortion on legal grounds. It drew on the report of the Shantilal Shah Committee of 1966. Parliament amended it in 2021, and the MTP Rules, 2021 (further amended in 2023) set out the details.
Under the current law, termination up to 20 weeks needs the opinion of one registered medical practitioner. Between 20 and 24 weeks, two practitioners must agree, and the woman must fall within the categories listed in the rules: survivors of sexual assault or incest, minors, women whose marital status has changed during pregnancy (widowhood or divorce), women with physical or mental disabilities, and certain other cases. The Supreme Court held in 2022 that unmarried women are also covered by the 20 to 24 week provision.
Beyond 24 weeks, termination is permitted only where a Medical Board finds a substantial foetal abnormality. Each state or union territory constitutes these boards under the rules.
Who can perform an MTP and where
Only a registered medical practitioner with the training prescribed in the rules may perform a termination, and it must take place at a facility approved for the purpose. Ask about the doctor's registration and the facility's approval before the procedure, not after.
Two methods are used. Medical abortion, with mifepristone followed by misoprostol, is approved in India up to nine weeks of pregnancy. Surgical methods, such as vacuum aspiration, are used for early pregnancies that are not suited to tablets and for somewhat later stages. Second-trimester terminations need a well-equipped hospital.
Failure of a contraceptive method is a recognised ground for termination up to 20 weeks, which is why clinics see a steady stream of unplanned pregnancies among married and unmarried women alike. Government hospitals and many district facilities offer the service free or at low cost under the National Health Mission, which matters because private charges rise with the stage of pregnancy.
Consent, confidentiality and sex determination
The woman's own consent is what the Act requires. No husband's or family member's permission is needed for an adult woman. For a minor or a woman with a mental illness, the consent of the guardian is required.
The Act also requires the practitioner to keep the woman's name and other particulars confidential, and the facility should be able to tell you how your record is stored. Do not hesitate to ask.
Prenatal sex determination is separately banned under the PCPNDT Act, 1994. No doctor may reveal the sex of the foetus, and using ultrasound for sex selection is a punishable offence.
What happens in the clinic
The visit usually begins with a history, an examination and an ultrasound to confirm the stage of pregnancy, because the method and the legal route both depend on it. Blood group and haemoglobin are often checked as well, and Rh-negative women may need an anti-D injection.
After a medical abortion, bleeding and cramping are expected for days, and a follow-up visit is arranged to confirm that the pregnancy has ended completely. After a surgical procedure, most women go home the same day. Warning signs include heavy bleeding that soaks through pads quickly, fever, severe pain or foul-smelling discharge. Go to the nearest hospital if any of these appear.
Counselling on contraception is part of good care, since fertility can return within a couple of weeks. This page is general information, not medical advice. A doctor who has examined you is the right person to guide the choice of method.
Safety and why legal services matter
Termination by a qualified doctor in a proper facility carries a low risk of complications. Causing a miscarriage outside the Act is an offence under the criminal law (the old IPC and now the BNS), except where the Act permits it. Unsafe procedures by unqualified providers remain a preventable cause of maternal death and illness worldwide, according to the WHO.
Awareness of the 2021 changes is still uneven. Many women assume the old 20-week limit applies in every case, or that they need a husband's consent. Both are wrong, and both are reasons why people delay seeking care until the options narrow. Medicines for medical abortion should be taken only on a registered doctor's prescription, not bought from an online seller or a chemist without advice.
MTP is legal, regulated and more accessible in India than many people realise, especially since the 2021 amendment. The practical first step is a registered medical practitioner at an approved facility, not an online pharmacy or an unqualified clinic.
MTP Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of MTP?
The full form of MTP is Medical Termination of Pregnancy, the legal term in India for ending a pregnancy. The procedure is governed by the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, as amended in 2021.
Up to how many weeks is abortion legal in India?
Up to 20 weeks with one registered medical practitioner's opinion. Between 20 and 24 weeks, two practitioners must agree and the woman must fall within the categories in the rules. Beyond 24 weeks it is permitted only for substantial foetal abnormality diagnosed by a Medical Board.
Is a husband's consent required for an MTP?
No. The consent of the woman alone is required for an adult woman, whatever her marital status. The practitioner and the facility must also keep her identity confidential.
What is the difference between a medical and a surgical MTP?
A medical MTP uses tablets, mifepristone followed by misoprostol, and is approved up to nine weeks. A surgical MTP, usually vacuum aspiration, is done at a clinic or hospital and is used when tablets are not suitable or when the pregnancy is more advanced.
Can a doctor refuse to perform an MTP?
A doctor may decline in some situations, but should refer the woman to another qualified practitioner or an approved facility. Delaying care or pressuring a woman to continue a pregnancy goes against the intent of the Act, especially because the legal time limits are fixed.
Is MTP free in government hospitals?
Many government hospitals and district facilities provide MTP services free or at low cost under the National Health Mission. Availability differs by state and facility, so ask the nearest primary health centre or ASHA worker where the service is offered.
