Which boards use the HSC name
The Higher Secondary Certificate is the Class 12 qualification in the boards that use that name. In Maharashtra the State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education conducts the HSC exam. Gujarat's board also calls its Class 12 exam HSC. In Tamil Nadu the Class 12 public examination is also widely called HSC, although the state's official wording is Higher Secondary Examination.
So when someone in Mumbai, Ahmedabad or Chennai says they cleared HSC, they mean Class 12. It comes two years after the SSC or Class 10 exam, and it decides what you can apply for next.
How HSC differs from CBSE Class 12 and plus-two
CBSE Class 12 and the ISC Class 12 are national or independent boards with their own syllabus and question style, but the level of the qualification is the same: the final school exam before university. Colleges treat HSC, CBSE and ISC as equivalent for admission, even though the marking schemes differ.
Other states use different names for the same stage. West Bengal calls it Higher Secondary (HS), Andhra Pradesh and Telangana run a two-year Intermediate course, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar also say Intermediate, Karnataka has the second PUC, and Kerala says Plus Two. The names differ, the level does not.
What the certificate is used for
Admission to a bachelor's degree is the obvious use, since universities set a minimum Class 12 percentage. Many government and bank recruitment exams also ask for Class 12 as the minimum qualification, and defence entrance forms ask for the certificate with your date of birth.
Entrance exams such as NEET and JEE need Class 12 subjects in the right combination, and some state admission processes combine Class 12 marks with entrance scores. The mix changes from year to year, so read the current notification. Keep two attested copies of the marksheet, because you will need them at every admission desk.
Documents you receive after the HSC exam
After results, students receive a marksheet and, in most boards, a passing certificate, and some boards also issue a migration certificate if you move to another state or board. Colleges ask for these along with the school leaving certificate.
If a marksheet is lost or has an error in a name or date of birth, apply to the divisional board or the board's office for a duplicate or correction. Give the seat number, year of passing and a copy of an ID. Correction rules and deadlines differ by board, so check your own board's website.

In New South Wales the HSC is the Higher School Certificate, awarded at the end of year twelve. It is assessed partly by school-based tasks and partly by state exams, and it feeds into university admission through an ATAR rank.
Planning what comes after HSC
Students in Maharashtra and Gujarat usually choose Science, Commerce or Arts after Class 10, and that choice decides the options after HSC. Science students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology can sit entrance tests for engineering and medicine. Commerce students move towards BCom, BBA, CA and similar courses, and Arts students towards BA, law, design and public service routes.
Many central universities now admit through the common CUET and not on Class 12 marks alone, so passing HSC is the minimum and not the whole plan. Diploma courses and ITI trades are also open to HSC graduates, and some lead to jobs sooner. Read the eligibility lines on each admission notice, and check how your board's subject names map to the ones asked for.
