What GPRS is

The GPRS full form is General Packet Radio Service. It is a mobile data standard built on top of GSM networks, standardised in the late 1990s by ETSI, and labelled 2.5G because it sits between the 2G voice networks and the 3G data networks that followed.

The technical leap was packet switching. Older mobile data was circuit-switched: it held a channel open for the whole session and billed by time. GPRS chops data into packets and uses the radio only when something is being sent, which made an always-on connection and billing by data volume possible.

That one change gave India WAP browsing, MMS picture messages, email on the handset and the first per-KB data plans. Handsets needed an APN setting before anything moved, and 'is GPRS enabled on your number?' was a standard customer care question for years.

The word 'packet' is the key idea for exams. Instead of reserving a line for a whole session, the network sends small chunks of data, each labelled with its destination, and reassembles them at the other end. The same principle runs the internet today, which is why GPRS is described as the first step towards always-on mobile data.

How fast was it, really?

The specification allowed a theoretical peak of around 170 kbps by combining all eight timeslots on a GSM carrier. Real phones rarely managed more than 20 to 40 kbps, because most handsets could use only three or four timeslots at once.

That is fast enough for a text page and too slow for video, which is why phones with video apps outgrew it quickly. EDGE, usually written as 2.75G, raised practical speeds to a few hundred kbps on the same radio network by packing more bits into each timeslot.

Speed also varied with signal strength and with how many timeslots an operator released in your cell, so two people in the same neighbourhood could get noticeably different results from the same plan.

India's GPRS decade

Commercial GPRS arrived in India in the early 2000s. By the middle of the decade the private operators and BSNL were all selling mobile data on it. 3G spectrum was auctioned only in 2010, so GPRS and EDGE carried Indian mobile internet for most of a decade.

Pricing shaped how people used it. Early data was billed per kilobyte, expensive enough that users checked their balance between pages, until daily and monthly packs made phones permanently online. For millions of Indians, 'the internet' first meant a small G or E icon at the top of a handset screen.

Then came 2016, when 4G arrived at far higher speeds and much lower prices after the launch of Reliance Jio. GPRS went from everyday to marginal within a couple of years.

How the speed generations compare

GPRS (2.5G) delivered tens of kbps. EDGE (2.75G) reached a few hundred kbps. 3G, on a new radio interface, delivered megabits per second. 4G LTE raised speeds to tens of megabits, and 5G raises them again. Each generation changed what ordinary people could do on a phone: text, then pictures, then video, then streaming.

A quick way to remember it for exams: 2G is GSM voice, 2.5G is GPRS, 2.75G is EDGE, 3G is UMTS or HSPA, 4G is LTE. Questions often ask which one introduced packet switching in mobile networks, and the answer is GPRS.

Where GPRS still turns up

Legacy machine-to-machine equipment keeps a slice of it alive. Smart meters, vending machines, some alarm and tracking devices and older point-of-sale machines use 2G and GPRS modules because they are cheap and low-power. Engineers call the closing down of 2G networks the 2G sunset problem, and it affects India's remaining 2G devices too.

It also persists in exam papers and interviews. The full form, the 2.5G label and the difference between packet-switched and circuit-switched data are standard general-knowledge material for banking, SSC and technical recruitment tests.

GPRS is the technology that first put the internet into an Indian pocket. The speeds look laughable now, but billing by data and staying always connected, the assumptions every mobile plan is built on, started here.

GPRS Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of GPRS?

The full form of GPRS is General Packet Radio Service. It is the packet-switched data service built on GSM networks that gave early mobile phones internet access, commonly called 2.5G.

What is the difference between GPRS and 3G?

GPRS carried data in packets over 2G GSM radios at tens of kbps, while 3G used a new radio interface to reach hundreds of kbps and then megabits per second. 4G LTE later multiplied those speeds again.

What speed did GPRS actually give?

The specification allowed a theoretical peak of around 170 kbps, but real phones usually achieved 20 to 40 kbps, depending on signal and operator settings. Comfortable for text and mail, unusable for video.

Is GPRS still used in India?

It lingers on 2G networks, mainly for basic handsets and machine-to-machine devices, while smartphones connect over 4G or 5G. Availability differs by operator and area, so check with your provider.

What is an APN?

Access Point Name is the gateway setting your phone uses for mobile data. Without the right APN, often set automatically these days, a handset can make calls and send SMS but cannot open the internet.

Why is GPRS called 2.5G?

It was an upgrade to 2G GSM networks that added packet data but did not use a new 3G radio system, so it was labelled halfway between the two generations.
