The first SMS and what it said

Short Message Service came out of the work telecom engineers did on GSM in the 1980s, and the specifications were settled by the early 1990s. On 3 December 1992, Neil Papworth, a software engineer at Sema Group working on a message centre for Vodafone, typed 'Merry Christmas' on a computer and sent it to Richard Jarvis's Orbitel handset on Vodafone's UK network. Jarvis could receive it but the phone had no way to reply.

Person-to-person texting took off a few years later, when handsets that could compose a message became common. Usage kept growing through the 2000s until messaging apps arrived.

Why a message is limited to 160 characters

The limit is a result of engineering choices made early on. The original GSM design allowed a message of 140 bytes, and packing each character into seven bits gives 160 Latin characters. A message with emoji or Indian scripts such as Devanagari uses a two-byte encoding instead, which cuts the limit to about 70 characters.

Longer texts are split into joined segments, each with its own header, so a long message holds slightly fewer characters per part (153 for Latin text). Adding one emoji can quietly turn a one-part text into two.

This is also why a text written in Hindi, Tamil or Bengali uses more segments than the same words in English.

How SMS actually gets delivered

SMS is store-and-forward. Your phone hands the text to the operator's Short Message Service Centre, which keeps trying until the recipient's handset can be reached. If the phone is on a call, in a basement or switched off, the centre waits and retries.

Because it travels over the network's signalling channels rather than a data connection, it works on any phone, on any network, without internet. That is the main reason banks still depend on it.

A delivery report comes back from the receiving network, not from the recipient. A 'delivered' status therefore means the message reached the handset, not that anyone read it.

Where India still runs on SMS

One-time passwords for banking, Aadhaar verification and app logins are the biggest category, alongside delivery alerts and appointment reminders. These come from a six-character sender ID such as HDFCBK or ICICIB instead of a phone number.

Under TRAI's Distributed Ledger Technology rules, which were enforced from 2021, every business sender must register its header and each message template before sending, and unregistered traffic is blocked. This is why genuine banks send from a header while a lot of spam now comes from ordinary mobile numbers.

A practical tip for anyone who runs a small business: if you send customer alerts, you cannot just use a personal number. Your operator or an authorised provider will ask for business documents and a registered header, and each template (for example, 'Your order has shipped') must be approved before it is sent. Approval can take a few days, so plan ahead for festival-season offers. Never forward an OTP to anyone who asks, even if the message appears to come from a bank.

SMS, spam and the apps that tried to replace it

Spam and phishing texts (often called smishing) pushed the regulator to act. You can register on the Do Not Disturb list, report unwanted commercial messages through your operator (a number commonly used is 1909), and report fraud on the Sanchar Saathi portal. DLT registration made sender identities traceable, which reduced the problem without ending it.

WhatsApp and RCS offer read receipts, media and encryption that SMS never had. Yet SMS survives because it needs no app, no data plan and works on every handset, including a feature phone with a keypad. For one-time codes and official alerts, that reach still beats richer alternatives.

If you receive a text that claims your bank account will be blocked, or asks you to click a link to claim a refund, do not respond. Banks do not ask for your PIN, CVV or OTP over SMS. Forward the message to your bank's official fraud reporting channel and block the number. Keep the screenshot, because it helps if you later need to file a complaint on the national cybercrime portal.

SMS is a 1990s technology that survives because it needs neither internet nor a particular handset. The next time a bank code arrives from a six-letter header, you will know why that header exists and why a message from an ordinary number deserves a second look.

SMS Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of SMS?

SMS stands for Short Message Service. It is the text messaging system built into mobile networks, carrying short messages between handsets through the operator's message centre without needing internet.

What was the first SMS ever sent?

On 3 December 1992, Neil Papworth sent 'Merry Christmas' from a computer to Richard Jarvis's phone on Vodafone's UK network. Mobile phones of that time could not send texts, so it was never answered from the handset.

Why is an SMS limited to 160 characters?

GSM allowed 140 bytes per message, which seven-bit encoding turns into 160 Latin characters. Messages with emoji or Indian scripts use two-byte encoding and fit about 70 characters, and longer texts are sent as joined segments.

Is SMS free on Indian prepaid plans?

Many plans bundle a number of SMS with the pack, and the allowance varies by operator and plan. Messages to short codes and premium numbers can be charged separately, so check the plan details on your operator's app.

What is a DLT-registered header in SMS?

It is the six-character sender ID, such as a bank's brand name, registered by the company on the operator DLT platform under TRAI rules. Business messages must use an approved header and template, or they are blocked.

How do I report a spam SMS in India?

Forward the message to 1909, use the complaint option in your operator's app or the Sanchar Saathi portal, or call your operator. Include the sender and screenshot where possible. Never reply to a link in a suspicious text.
