GDS Full Form
Gramin Dak Sevak
What does GDS stand for? A government term, explained.
GDS Full Form in English, letter by letter
GDS full form is Gramin Dak Sevak, a village-level postal worker of India Post posted at a Branch Post Office.
GDS Full Form in Indian Languages
The person who runs the small post office in your village is usually a GDS: Gramin Dak Sevak, India Post's village-level mail and banking worker. The six-language names follow.
GDS full form and the job itself
GDS full form is Gramin Dak Sevak, which means rural postal servant. GDS staff Branch Post Offices, the small units that make up most of India Post's network of over 1.5 lakh post offices.
The cadre has three posts: Branch Postmaster (BPM), who runs the office; Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM); and Dak Sevak. A small Branch Post Office may be run by one BPM alone.
Duties cover delivering and booking mail, selling stamps, handling speed post and registered articles, and taking savings bank deposits and withdrawals for villagers who would otherwise travel to the nearest town.
Eligibility: Class 10 marks, no exam
Recruitment runs through the GDS online portal at indiapostgdsonline.gov.in. There is no written test and no interview. The merit list is prepared from Class 10 marks, and candidates must have passed Mathematics, English and the local language.
The age limit in recent notifications is 18 to 40 years on the last date of application, with relaxations for SC/ST, OBC, persons with disabilities and other categories. Basic computer knowledge is expected. Earlier notifications also asked for cycling, so read the current one before applying.
Women, SC/ST, PwD and transwomen applicants have been exempt from the application fee of 100 rupees. Vacancies are notified circle by circle, and you apply to a specific division and post office, so the location on the allotment letter matters.
Keep scans ready before the window opens: the Class 10 marksheet and certificate, a caste or disability certificate if you claim relaxation, an ID proof, a recent photograph and a signature, all in the size and format the portal asks for. Documents are checked in original at verification, and a mismatch in name or date of birth is a common reason for rejection.
What a GDS earns and gets
TRCA, not salary
GDS are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance, not a pay scale. In the 2025 notification the range was about 12,000 to 29,380 rupees a month for a BPM and 10,000 to 24,470 rupees for an ABPM or Dak Sevak, with a yearly increment. Work is counted in hours: roughly four to five hours a day.
Employee status
GDS are not classified as regular Central Government servants. They receive benefits such as gratuity and group insurance, but not the pension and provident fund of regular employees, which is why regularisation keeps coming up in staff demands.
Promotion route
GDS is a feeder cadre. Dak Sevaks can move up to ABPM and BPM, and GDS with enough service can compete for Postman, Mail Guard and Postal Assistant posts through departmental examinations.
Working life at a Branch Post Office
A Branch Post Office usually runs from a room in the postmaster's own house or a small village building, for a fixed set of hours each day.
The day starts with the mail bag from the sub-post office. Registered articles are signed for, parcels held back, and letters sorted for delivery on foot or by bicycle.
Counter work follows: savings bank deposits, recurring deposit instalments, money orders and stamps, and increasingly Aadhaar-enabled payments and DBT withdrawals for people with no bank nearby.
The village post office as a financial outlet
Branch Post Offices do what banks often cannot: a savings account, a deposit or a welfare payment within walking distance of the house.
India Post also runs India Post Payments Bank, and GDS staff handle its doorstep services in rural areas, using a handheld device and a smartphone.
Where a village has no bank branch, the Branch Post Office is often the only formal financial outlet. That is why the quality of the local GDS shows up directly in how easily people receive pensions and scholarships.
GDS versus other meanings, and checking a notification
Outside India Post, GDS commonly means Global Distribution System, the booking network behind flight and hotel reservations used by travel agents, built around Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport.
In Indian job notifications, however, GDS almost always means Gramin Dak Sevak. A recruitment PDF mentioning TRCA, BPM and ABPM is certainly the postal one.
The job is often mistaken for a regular Central Government post. Read the engagement rules before applying, because service conditions, hours and benefits differ from those of government employees.
Apply only on the official portal and ignore anyone who asks for money to 'confirm' a seat. Selection is by merit list, so no agent can improve your marks.
GDS, Gramin Dak Sevak, is the post behind the counter of most village post offices in India. If you are applying, your Class 10 marks and the current notification are what count.
