INC Full Form in Indian Languages
From the 1885 Bombay session to coalition politics today, INC, the Indian National Congress, has shaped most phases of Indian public life. Six-language names follow.
How the Indian National Congress began
INC full form is Indian National Congress, founded on 28 December 1885 in Bombay, where about 72 delegates met at the Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College. Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British civil servant, did much of the groundwork, and Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee was the first president.
The early Congress was a moderate body of lawyers and journalists that petitioned for a greater Indian share in administration. Dadabhai Naoroji's drain-of-wealth argument gave it an economic case against colonial rule long before the mass agitations began.
The party that ran the freedom movement
The 1907 Surat session split the party between Moderates and Extremists. The two wings came together again at the Lucknow session of 1916, where the Congress also reached an agreement with the Muslim League.
Gandhi returned from South Africa in 1915 and turned it into a mass movement: Non-Cooperation in 1920 to 22, the Salt March of 1930, and Quit India in 1942. The Lahore session of 1929, under Jawaharlal Nehru, adopted the Purna Swaraj resolution that is remembered every 26 January.
The Constituent Assembly and the first governments
Congress dominated the Constituent Assembly, where Nehru, later India's first Prime Minister, moved the Objectives Resolution in December 1946 and B.R. Ambedkar chaired the drafting committee. Its first governments abolished zamindari, set up the Planning Commission in 1950 and built a mixed economy around public sector industry.
Through the 1950s and 60s the party ran on factions rather than a single line, and political scientists described India as a system of one-party dominance. The Syndicate, the conservative wing and the left all operated inside the same Congress banner.
The two big splits after Independence
Congress led the Centre and most states for decades after 1947. The first major split came in 1969, when Indira Gandhi's supporters formed Congress (R) against the organisational wing, which carried on as Congress (O).
A second split followed in 1978, when Indira's faction became Congress (I). After the Janata Party's victory in 1977, Congress returned to power in 1980, and the Election Commission later recognised Indira's party as the Indian National Congress, with the hand as its symbol. Its main national rival today is the BJP.
The Congress today
Mallikarjun Kharge was elected party president in October 2022, the first person outside the Gandhi family to hold the post in about two decades, though the family remains its most visible leadership. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election the Congress won 99 seats as the lead partner of the INDIA bloc, up from 52 in 2019.
The hand is its reserved election symbol, and state units field candidates under the same banner. Membership drives, AICC sessions and state committee elections make up the internal machinery that decides ticket distribution and alliances.
Several regional parties began as breakaways from the Congress, which is why the party's history and the history of Indian coalition politics are so hard to separate.
Inside the party, delegates elect the president, the Congress Working Committee is the top decision-making body, and Pradesh Congress Committees run the state units. The Indian Youth Congress and the NSUI are its youth and student wings. Annual sessions once travelled to a different city each year: Gandhi presided over the 1924 Belgaum session, the only time he held the post.
The letters in older documents
INC usually means the Indian National Congress, but older papers also use it for the Congress (Organisation), the conservative breakaway that carried on until the 1977 merger into the Janata Party, and for Congress (I), Indira Gandhi's faction. The year of the document tells you which party is meant.
Outside politics, Inc. is the usual abbreviation for Incorporated in company names, as in a US firm called Example Inc.
The Congress flag and symbol changed with each split, and the Election Commission had to allocate fresh symbols more than once, which is how the hand became the symbol of the party most Indians now call Congress.
INC, Indian National Congress, is the party that was both the umbrella of the freedom movement and the leading governing party of independent India for many years. Read the year alongside the letters to know which Congress is meant.
